Top Notch Flick That's Gets Better with Each Subsequent Viewing

It takes a very rare, and oftentimes unique film to actually get better each time you watch it. Much like Nolan's previous works in Memento and his remake of Insomnia, The Prestige is such a film, as you peel off a new layer each time you revisit the movie. A quick visit to any movie forum will display the depth and "discuss-ability" of this gem. Most movies are so formulaically "ho-hum" that you watch it once, perhaps even enjoy it, but then relegate it to dust-collecting status. This one is purely an experience, where Nolan takes you through what for most of us is an unfamiliar world, outlining an intense rivalry where neither protaganist is favored over the other in the script, exhibiting utter devotion/self-sacrifice to their art.

As a recent leaper from the SD to the BD format, I was eager to test this one out as it represented an upgrade for me. After watching the film on BD, I compared it to the SD DVD on my 50" Panasonic 700U, and to be quite honest, the PQ on the SD disc does indeed hold its own. A blind test would still champion the BD as a winner each and every scene, but for PQ considerations alone, many with only the DVD would be content with just sticking with it. What impresses me most between the two discs is the black levels on the BD. They are deep, unmuddled, and breathtaking. And, as approximately 75% of the film is staged in dark scenes, this is a welcome improvement.

More and more, I am more amazed by the improvement Blu-Ray gives us in in AQ than in PQ, though the latter is fantastic as well. Rear channels are not used often, but by no means are they underutilized given the subject material. Center channel work is superb, dialogue is consistently audible. The point being is that this is how I remember the sound mix in theaters, and I fully appreciate the fidelity in this regard.

Extras in this film warrant a 3-3.5, an average score, because, well, they are average in both quantity and quality. Overall, I would definitely recommend this others who are willing to "watch closely."

A Great Movie with Outstanding Twists!

The Prestige makes its way onto Blu-Ray.

The first thing viewers notice is the wonderful picture quality that the film has. The transfer was almost flawless, having grainy parts here and there in some of the dark scenes, but in no way distracts the viewer from the picture itself.

Audio Quality was amazing. The blending of the highs and lows was remarkable and had my audio setup banging throughout the movie. And highlighting major plot twists with the eerie music which was a pleasure and made the movie even more enjoyable.

The extras were not really present at all in the movie just regular behind the scenes features, although interesting there was nothing spectacular.

The movie itself was done very well and offered many twists to keep the viewer guessing. It was more enjoyable the second time around because we are forced to look for the little clues to pick up on and say "Ohhh" now I understand. Also utilizing some "real" individuals from history such as Tesla and Thomas Edison was also a surprising treat. Made the viewer believe that the main characters actually lived and was around during this point in time. Also the award winning team of Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, and Michael Caine makes this movie even more enjoyable. Hugh Jackman also plays a wonderful part in this movie, and makes the viewer feel what he felt.

Overall this is a wonderful addition to any Blu-Ray collection since it shows the capabilities that Blu-Ray has. A thrilling movie that will leave you guessing until the very end!

Another Beautiful Film from Christopher Nolan

Truly, Christopher Nolan has made some beautiful films. From Batman Begins to the Dark Knight, all of his films were great. I enjoyed all of his movies between Batman Begins and the Dark Knight and I wanted to explore more of his movies. I decided to pick-up the Prestige. The movie was awesome. When I first read the plot, I wasn't very interested, but I'm glad I chose to ignore my first thoughts. The story was a plus. The story was really strong, but it was a little hard to follow, because it was a little confusing during my first watch.

Once again, the PQ failed to disappoint. Almost every Blu-ray has the awesome PQ that you shouldn't be missed. The black levels were done well as there are some dark parts in the movie. I was also able to see every single incredible detail in the movie. Awesome!

The AQ was also awesome. It didn't sound strange and it was quite loud.

I wasn't able to watch the Extras.

Once again, Christopher Nolan failed to disappoint me in this film. I'm looking forward to his future projects.

A Great Film

Saw this film for the first time on BluRay and thought it was great. My only complaint is that the video quality didn't seem as good as Lost Season 3 or Hart's War. Don't get me wrong, the video looked good, just not 5/5 good.

Unfortunately the extras are pretty minimal though I found some of it pretty interesting. I won't elaborate just in case someone out there hasn't watched the movie. It is best watching without knowing what you are going into.

I would recommend this DVD.

You two deserve each other...

The Prestige is an absolutely incredible study of obsession and what it can do to people. Directed by Christopher Nolan between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, The Prestige is cerebral, unique, dramatic, and tragic, it's a work of art. The film features an all-star cast of Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine, and Scarlett Johansson, all of whom do a fantastic job. If movies like The Prestige are what Nolan needs to do between each summer blockbuster to stay creative, then more power to him, because the results are incredible.

This movie looks and sounds fantastic, it's one of the best presented visual explorations of the early industrial society you can find. The extras are solid, but there are no commentaries unfortunately. Make no mistake, The Prestige is one of the best movies on BD, it's a great disc, and an absolute Must Buy.

A great movie with a great transfer

The movie is flawless, with excellent performances by pretty much everyone in the movie. The picture and sound quality are almost of reference quality, and there are enough special features to go around. A must have for any Blu-Ray collection.

One of the best movies ever made! The movie itself is a magic trick!!!

This is considered Tier 0, reference for picture quality. The movie is so complex and refreshing. Most people think they understand it the first time around only to realize they have missed so much when others who have seen it multiple times discuss it with them. Check it out. Just like the magician dares, pay close attention. The movie itself is a magic trick!!!

Very Nice.

My first proper Blu-Ray disc. Looks fantastic, sounds fantastic. Haven't watched the extras. And to top the excellent transfer, it's an amazing movie that is so layered and complex it begs for repeat viewings. Pick this one up.

Audio was great but their isn't much to talk about when it comes to extras.

A twist indeed.

Great picture. One of the best quality videos in my collection. Great movie of course. Extras were a little week. Though some were kind of interesting. Definitely a must own Blu-ray though!
I don't have an audio system, so I can't really rate that too well.

Excellent movie

in today's age were hundred's of millions of dollar are spent on making a movie, the prestige had a budget of 40 million and is one of my favorite movies. i will not re-iterated what has already been posted about the plot of the movie, the only thing i can say is that if you have a blu-ray player, this movie needs to be in your collection.
