The Terminator
The Terminator is truly one of the sci-fi classics and although I feel like the second is the best, the first established the characters and tone that we have come to love. The plot is brilliant and it shows a terrifying vision for the future. James Cameron keeps the action tense and his script allows for great character development and you really care for these now iconic characters. The movie is top off with fantastic casting, this is the movie that made Arnold a star and both Linda Hamilton & Michael Biehn are perfectly casted. The Terminator is an amazing achievement in film, it had amazing effects for their time and turned James Cameron into a mega director. The PQ is okay, it does look better then any DVD but there is still a lot of present grain and the entire picture has a washed out look to it. However, select scenes do have good depth and detail to them for the age of the film. The AQ is also an improvement but is nothing spectacular. This disc is seriously lacking in extras for such an iconic film. Overall, the movie itself is a true classic, it provides a tense and chilling look into a possible future but the disc is pretty disappointing. The transfer & audio are pretty average and there pretty much no extras so I would say rent this copy and hold out for a better edition that is jammed pack full of bonus materials, which should come soon considering T4 is on the way. |

Hey buddy, you got a dead cat in there or what?
This was my third Blu-Ray disc, and not having the original on DVD, I can't really compare the PQ. However, I can compare it to T2 and I honestly think the PQ on this one is just a tad bit better. The audio is nice -- uncompressed PCM. The extras, like most early BD discs, are skim. Here we have 7 deleted scenes and a making of documentary, which is decent. If you're a fan of 80's sci-fi or the Terminator trilogy, this is must own simply due to its PQ and pricepoint. I tend to see this going for fairly cheap. |

gotta love it!
So I decided to add this one to my BD collection today. Definitely a nice step up from the dvd in terms of picture clarity and all around sharpness. Though the transfer does have it's share of wear and tear this picture is the best I've ever seen it (being a huge fan of the series I have seen the film a more than a few times in theaters and I've run across a few 35mm prints that looked far worse than the presentation on this disc). All in all you might think the film is a little dated, bu the story is there and that's what keeps me coming back again and again. |

Good PQ!
Cult classic, but PQ is definitely much better than on any DVD release, i dont know where some people, including recensionist, are looking. It is quite opposite - T2 has almost the same PQ as DVD ultimate edition, what a shame!! |

Very good.
This is my favorite movie of all time and I decided to upgrade and get it on Blu-Ray and I wasn't disappointed. The PQ and AQ is surprisingly good, but not outstanding. Lack of content, however, might hinder the overall experience. |

Prime candidate for restoration
This gem of a film sorely needs a restoration on its optical composite shots! The amount of dirt printed into these shots is terrible. For example, the Terminator's arrival scene has the electrical effects. This would have been optically printed from the plate shot of the garbage truck as one element and the lightning effect as another, meaning that the film is handled quite a bit before it gets to the point of being a final shot on the negs used to release the film. Coupled with the low budget of this film (therefore perhaps not the best labs handling the film), this has left black specks on these sorts of shots. Otherwise, given the nature of this film, this is still an upgrade from the DVD. The multi-channel PCM sound track was great and much clearer than the same new mix on the DVD! It is a shame that the original mono is not included (I miss the original gun shot sound effects from the .45 shooting the other Sarah Connor and Reece's struggle with the police officer in the alley-way). |

"There is no fate but to what we make for ourselves." (deleted scene)
The film is a classic; it's a simple story, but with some thought-provoking content and excellent characters. Some scenes are even emotionally evoking. Not to mention, it features some great action and special/effects. Production design is great, featuring not only good props, costumes, and sets, but also cool robots. Photography is great; acting and writing are excellent; music is good.
The video quality is not 100% crystal clear, but I thought it was really good anyway; it seems sharp and clear, despite the grain. The sound is good. Includes all the same extras from the original DVD (including some excellent deleted scenes). |

Nice night for a walk..................
James Cameron's classic sci-fi The Terminator comes home to blu in a decent transfer with good audio quality. Sure some of the grain is in there, but you have to remember it was shot on film stock from the year 1984. This movie still holds up today with the solid performances of all the cast and even though the special effects were groundbreaking for it's day, looking at them now you know what is real and what is fake. The one thing missing is the love for extra's given the fact that they have redone T2 more then several times. Perhaps in 2014 when the movie turns 30 we will get a proper ultimate edition. Until then this one is worth it's low price. |

T1 BD is OK
I'll keep it short. The film is a sci-fi masterpeice with a great premise, so not much needs to be said there. This transfer could have been better but knowing what kind of money went into the production and post-production of this film coupled with the time period in which it was made, I know this is probably the best we can ever expect it to look. Sharpness and detail is competent, though the image is flat in appearance and grain is ever present. The last two factors are most likely the result of aesthetic choices and Cameron seems to have no qualms about grain (at least not before True Lies). The disc isn't one to show off but it's a fair effort and a worthy purchase if you want the definitive version of the film. |

Needs a "Special Edition" Makeover, Stat!
This is my first blu-ray dvd. I had to say, I was impressed with the picture quality. It could still use some punch in the visual department in certain scenes. Maybe my High def tv is really good becaise even pre-blu-ray my dvds looked almost high def.
Movie - As for the movie itself, If you haven't seen Terminator what island were you stranded on? I bought this movie on VHS, DVD and now Blu-Ray. I remember seeing it in the movie theater for the first time and being blown away. I only took off a half point for the movie itself because of the special effects being dated. If they had digitally updated the computer aspect and some things that are obvious fakes (like Arnold removing the eyeball) this would be a 5 star movie again.
Video - There isn't much to improve upon here. Again I'm going by my TV's performance. I will have to revise it when other blu-ray movies arrive tomorrow. There are spots that could use a bit more of a touch. What I have to stress here for non-blu-ray owners is what stands out and makes it an eventual must-own. with Terminator it was the lightning scenes and laser battles of the future. They come at you like 3-D, only without the glasses. Maybe I have a really good hookup or something, but I was really impressed with the quality. I'm sure when I get used to it, I will get more jaded, but for now I'm impressed. From what some people are saying, that this isn't so great in blu-ray I can't wait to see some other movies, eventually some newer ones, but for now I'm buying some of my favorite classics that I feel are must-buys. Vibrant colors really stand out in this movie. Again the lightning effects, laser fires & colors of Sarah's roommate's clothes (watch closely they look like they want to pop off the screen!) I'm anxious to see other movies to see how new older movies look. I was a little disappointed with the dull colors, thinking they might have been raised a little more than what's here. I have to remember this is an older blu-ray release. When are they ever going to give this movie it's just due with a Special Edition or Ultimate Edition loaded with extras??
Audio - Again some of the things that stand out with the video stands out in the audio as well. The laser fire, lightning and gun fire. Some parts just sound downright weird at times, but this is more of an uncommon thing, for the most part it sounds good. Maybe I need to find the right audio settings on my tv. So for now I can't knock it too much, just wish it had more punch to it as the video did. The future scenes, lightning effects and gunfire is what really stands out here, the rest of the audio feels more of the same to me as the dvd releases.
Extras - Nothing to write home about. Nothing but the trailers are really in high-def. They should be required to make everything (extras) high-def because that's what their selling here isn't it? Also, if a movie is short on Extras is there really much incentive to buy it? In my case it was because this is my first blu-ray dvd. I love Terminator that much that it is a must-buy when there are upgrades in technology.
Overall - When I think of SciFi I think of the moment the Terminator stalks Kyle & Sarah into the Cyberdyne building. None of the other Terminator movies recaptured this aspect, that even limping the Terminator was unstoppable in it's pursuit of Sarah, until the end. Every sequel has tried to recapture that deternined walk, but it either comes off fake, forced or both. Even though it is dated now, it still looks very much what I think of when I think of Sci-Fi movies. I guess it was the magic of seeing it in the theater as a kid. It was new and unexpected. This was back in the day before spoilers ruined things and commercials gave away too much of the secrets of a movie. I still get that vibe everytime I watch Terminator. I must say in my opinion, that this viewing was better than the original theater viewing all those years back. Until they update this movie again this will remain the best the original Terminator has looked. If you are buying only for extras you should wait until a future edition arrives, if it ever does. |

The Remix is blasphemy!
The video was as fine as it can ever be. The movie was shot on a tight budget in 1984 so I don't
expect it to look like Crank or Pirates of the Caribbean. The audio remix is in excellent
shape because it does sound great. But... I, like the reviewer, am pining for the original mono mix
as well. The budget on this was so low and schedule so tight that the original master was done in
mono. Not only am I missing the mono mix, but the new 5.1 mix (also on the DVD) is a complete
bastardization with completely new sound effects for gunshots and those futuristic flying ships. In
fact, those "flashback" sequences sound almost entirely replaced except for a few original elements
here and there and dialogue.
If there's one thing that bothers me more than anything it's tampering with the original mix like
that. Don't get me wrong, the quality of it sounds great, but it's like trying to watch Jaws and
the eerie theme is being played on an accordian. It just isn't right. |

Your Terminated F****r!
What can you say about such a classic sci-fi movie? You love it or you don't I guess, and I love it. I just watched this after having seen Terminator Salvation with my wife and sisters, both of which are in their early twenties, and they had no recollection of this movie!
They both liked it but I don't think they *really* liked it, I guess you had to be there in the moment to really have a love for this movie. If you ask me the story is still better and has more emotion then the brand new Terminator flick.
The movie is obviously old from the PQ, this is probably the worst looking BD I own but that doesn't mean its really crappy (well kinda) but after the first few minutes you really kinda forget about it and just watch. Not sure I can say its much better then the DVD I own but oh well its Terminator right?! |

A Classic.
i heard a lot of crap about this transfer but i thought it rocked, a lot better than the lions gate original T2 release. it was sharp and the colors held up very nicely. and the PCM is the best this movie will ever sound. Highly Recommended for terminator fans. |

I'll Be Back
Sorry but to me this is easily the worst of the 4 Terminator movies. I think the problem with me is that it was made too early. The special effects are awful compared to the other 3. The AQ was very good but the PQ for a Bluray was bad. Extras in SD don't rate well for me either. At one point the movement of the Terminator looked like Ray Harryhausens stop motion technique but not up to near his quality. The only 2 good things I can say about this is that I only paid $5 plus tax and it was the fastest loading Bluray I ever put in my player. |

Bad Transfer youch!
Ok, good movie bad transfer. Compared to the dvd version there is no difference. I think it has been said enough here by many people, but I'll say it again, it looks the same as a dvd and even then just looks overall crappy. At no time in the whole movie did I think to myself I was watching HD. This is why Lowry Digital is doing a remaster now to make it HD. |

Sci fi classic blasts it way on to Blu Ray
If you havn't seen this film and you an action/sci fi fan, you owe it to yourself to see this movie. Instead of watching Transformer for the 82,997, rent the Terminator and watch a real sci fi classic!
As was said in the actual review this movie was shot on a very low budget, the film stock they used probably was not all that good or that well preserved. I was disapointed in how the image itself look, there was dust dirt and scratches all over the place. Hopefully they put out another remastered edition with better video and the same audio. The video had nothing to do with a lack of space on the 25 gig disc.
The PCM audio puts you in the middle of the fight for the future. This won't rival Pirates of the Carribean, Casino Royal or Live Free or Die Hard but considering they got the film to sound this good from mono origins it rates a 5 I doubt this could sound any better than it does here |
