Don't be discouraged by bad reviews.

No way is this film average at best. Great cast, great plot, great action... but I digress.

This Bluray is a very nice upgrade from owning the DVD. Picture quality was great considering the original film stock that was used. I recommend it highly!

The Untouchables is film making at it's best!

I have had blu-ray for three months now and I can't get over the fact that every movie I have up-graded from DVD has changed the viewing and audible experience to a whole new level. Its like seeing these movies for the first time or reliving the theater experience. The Untouchables is no exception. This one has it all! Deadly action, comedy, tommy guns, G-Men, sorrow, revenge, Al Capone, revenge payback, gangsters and victory! Set in the 1930s, you get to see some incredible costumes, cars etc. of this time period in old crime ridden Chicago. PQ is very good. Excellent detail and realistic colors. SQ is very detailed and at times powerful for a movie of it's age. The excellent musical score really jumped out with BD and the acting, directing is superb in this movie. The characters (both good and bad) are alive and realistic. Doesn't feel like you are watching a movie. The Untouchables is film making at it's best and an very good time period movie. Highly recommended!

Quality film making...

I saw the original theatrical release of this movie back in 1987, and I think that I have only seen it twice since then. Now, I have finally seen the blu-ray, I enjoyed even better than the first time. No, it's not full of excessive gun shots and vehicles full of holes like many of the other gangster flicks from the past, but this movie does hold it's own. There is a nice balance of action and drama.

Robert DeNiro playing Al Capone is worth the ticket price. He definitely brought the Chicago mobster to life! PQ & AQ were better than I expected on this blu-ray due to the movie being so old. With its reasonable price its definitely worth adding to your growing blu-ray collection.

"ISN'T THAT JUST LIKE A WOP? BRINGS A KNIFE TO A GUN FIGHT"

I remember seeing this great film in the summer of '87 and really liking it. Still holds up very well all these years later. This is a classic old style gangster film Hollywood use to make in the 30's and 40's. David Mamet's script is tough and smart and the entire cast gives great performances especially Sean Connery in his Oscar winning role as Irish Officer Malone and Robert DeNiro as tough guy Al Capone. The direction and cinematography are first rate also. This definitely ranks as one of DePalma's better efforts.

The Blu-Ray looks fantastic in anamorphicc 2:40

The audio is not lossless but still comes in loud and clear

If your a fan of gangster movies this one should be in your collection!!

"I want him DEAD. I want his family DEAD!..."

A classic on blu-ray. Being as popular a movie this is, it is hard to give a spoiler to the ending. But then again, there are a number of young'uns on this site...

The PQ is amazing. There is so much detail in some of the interior scenes - like when Capone and Ness confront each other at the hotel or when Capone is talking to reporters in the theater - I had missed when I watched this movie on SD. The details have come across very well in the transfer.

The AQ is less than jaw-dropping. The best they had was 6.1 DTS. I think I'm totally spoiled for lossless PCM now!!!

Reviews for other sites:
High-def digest: PQ: 4/5, AQ: 3.5/5 (Don't agree on PQ)
DVD Talk: PQ: 5/5, AQ:3.5/5
Home Theater Forum: PQ: 4.5/5, AQ: 4.5/5
Home Theater Spot: PQ 4.5/5, AQ: 3.5/5

Overall, I like the movie and the genre. The blu-ray does a great job in enhancing the experience. Highly Recommended.

Deniro & Connerey are untouchable - 4 Oscars and maybe deserves more.

Have to disagree with the Godfather comment. It's a struggle for me to stay awake through them, especially the sequels. I like Peter Griffins' take on them ala Family Guy when he says that the Godfather movies insist upon themselves. A rare brilliant statement from any Griffin aside from Stewie or Brian. Not to be argumentative, this is just MY opinion. oh yea, and Peters.
This story keeps the high tempo pace up from start to finish. Deniro and Connery are untouchable as always. Showed it to my 18 yr old nephew and he commented about how they rarely make movies this good these days.
I could honestly care less about extras. If I want more info I can get it in spades off of the internet. Don't like behind the scenes, and PIP for movies makes about as much sense to me as womens oil wrestling in winter clothing.
Overall I rate this one a must see.

How is this a classic?

The Untouchables is considered by some to be one of the top classic gangster movies of all time. I doubt you will see anyone claim its as good as Godfather or any of the Scorsese mob film, but it has been ranked high up there. Never having seen it before, I was eager to give it a rent when it came out to see what the talk was all about. Needless to say, I was very disappointed.

Everything about this film feels rushed; nothing is given time to develop. Friendships between the four men feel shallow. Scenes of high action feel rushed and acting in general feels overdone. The music tries very difficult to push the emotion, but again, as a viewer I feel pushed towards a feeling rather than assisted in that direction. There were very few things I found redeeming about this film.

For a classic film, it does look and sound spectacular. The print is clean and the encode is sharp and crisp (despite a few scenes which seem out of focus). Sound is also well done. A surprise was the DTS track which should compare well to the DD+ track on the HD DVD version. Not lossless, but a nice step in that direction.

Even as a film of mob movies, I can not recommend this to anyone. I don't know if I just whole heartedly disagree with the directorial style or if I'm missing something that binds this movie together, but I just don't see it. Paramount has done an excellent job in the restoration, and I'm sure there are plenty out there who enjoy this film. If you fit that bill, enjoy.

Great movie and worth the upgrade from DVD

I'm an absolute fan of this movie since the day I first saw it. Great cast, good score. I must have seen it a dozen times by now all in different formats (tv, vhs, dvd, blu) and this blu ray absolutely does not disappoint.

The PQ is very good although some scenes have got blurry picture here and there but I guess that must be the master. The AQ is also very good & clear.

The bluray is worth the upgrade from dvd for sure.

Best transfer I've seen. . . .

Just want to let those who considers buying this movie to know that the PQ is absolutely stunning!Don't get why anyone would give it less than 5/5.Sound is good although not sure how good since I can't really compare it to the original, but compared to other BD's it comes out very good.

If you really like the movie, the PQ is alone worth the price:)

That's the Chicago way.........

With a great award winner cast, a well established Director and a decent script, you got the making of a great movie. The Untouchables is that movie. Paramount has done an outstanding job on the whole disc, PQ & AQ are top notch and considering this movie is from 22 years ago.
Plus with a low price tag of 14.99, why not add it to your collection.

Add it to your collection!

I definitively think that this is one of the best gangster's movies ever made. I particually enjoyed this edition over the DVD for the sound improvement and the picture quality as well. From the dvd french stereo dub @192Kbps to the 5.1 EX @640Kbps, it's definitively not the same listening experience! I totally rediscovered the movie with blu-ray. The classic score of Ennio Morriconne is more than well reproduced and amazing! The picture quality shows some pretty good black levels and surpasses the DVD edition without any problems. For a 9.99$ investment at Wal-Mart, this is a must own title, but at 20$, rent it firt, unless it's a classic for you just like me!Recommended
