You've Never Seen Superheroes Like This

Super Hero movies is a large genre. Big budgets, big effects, big everything. You'll see glamorous superhero movies like Batman Begins, Iron Man, and The Dark Knight that, don't get me wrong are good movies, are somewhat light. Watchmen is not that kind of movie.

Watchmen starts off with showing a group of superheroes through history called the watchmen. They started in the early 20th century as masked vigilantes. Like Batman.
But when one of them is murdered, a Watchmen hunts down the killer to find who is killing the watchmen.

This is a phenomenal movie. I enjoyed it so much I almost saw it again. That is pretty rare for me.

Video: There are many distinctive visual styles to be seen in this movie. From the dark alleyways of New York to the Vietnam war scenes, no two shots are the same. That being said, the detail is top notch and easy a reference quality disk.

Audio: With gunshots, explosions, and one of the greatest movie soundtracks since Forrest Gump, Watchmen lands on blu ray with excellent results. The sound is clear, the LFE effects are pounding, making this the best sound I have heard from a movie.

Extras: Watchmen comes with three disks. I have only sampled the Desolation Row video, which is amazing imho, but the maximum movie mode is excellent for diehard fans.

Overall:
This is by far the best blu ray package since "The Dark Knight". With a dark storyline, stark visuals, and able performances by all, this makes a perfect buy.

"What happened to the American dream?! It came true!"

Closely adapted from the original graphic novel (apparently one of the best novels ever; I only found out about it from this film), “The Watchmen” is a very different superhero movie. It’s dark, bleak, and extremely R-rated. It focuses less on the action (although there is enough to keep it exciting), and much more on drama, thought-provoking themes and ideas, and character development. It is also very long (three hours for the director’s cut). All of this combined may be very off-putting for some folks.

Without prior knowledge or experience with “The Watchmen” novel, I found the movie quite interesting at the very least. The plot is long with some slow melodramatic parts, but it is still mesmerizing and interesting. The story is brilliant and well-told; it presents a very original, poignant, and clever insight on superhero lore. Characters are deep; acting has a few dull moments, but much of it is still great. Writing matches the novel for the most part. Photography is brilliant (some scenes are downright beautiful and invoking). Production design (sets, props, costumes, creatures) is good; a little similar to the novel, but I think they made a lot of things better and even expanded on some areas. Special effects are top-notch. Music score and soundtrack is good too.

The disc is good. The video has some graininess, but it is still a very clear, clean, sharp, and detailed picture. Color and contrast are good. Sound quality is excellent. This set includes a whole bunch of extra features (webisodes, a commentary, one or two featurettes, and a maximum viewing mode that you watch as the movie is playing) and a digital copy. The “Tales of the Black Freighter” remains a separate disc that you need to buy separately, if interested (the “Ultimate Edition” will include this feature in with the movie, and it comes out this winter).

This is the sole purpose that blu-ray was invented....simply AMAZING! Maximum Movie Mode is one of the coolest features I have ever seen. Can't wait for the "Ultimate Cut." Buy this BD and watch it until you love it....then watch it some more.

VERY IMPRESSED

What a fascinating and original "superhero" movie! Epic is the word-- so many ideas, so many colorful characters-- well worth seeing and owning.
Picture and audio quality are excellent-- not for the kids though!!

Great Movie for Fans

I read the watchmen a long while ago and really enjoyed it, and when i first heard they were making a movie i thought "oh no" they are really gonna ruin this story, and in theatres they kinda did, but the Directors cut that has 25 mins or so more, running 3 hours and 6 mins, adds so much more to the story,

now becareful, first time viewers who have no idea what this movie is and enjoy comic movies, its not a Dark Knight or an X men, theres virtually no action in the movie, its more of a Murder Mystery with Superheroes in an alternate universe, sound complicated? it is, but its great. highly recommend this one, just understand what it is before you go into it.

Watchmen

Watchmen had a lot to live up to considering how fantastic the novel was and luckily while it isn't quite the masterpiece I was hoping for, Snyder has faithfully re-created the novel and the movie is great. Snyder as with 300 has done an excellent job in following the novel's style and the visuals in Watchmen are epic and many times are exact re-creations of panels from the novel. Snyder's direction in the action sequences is magnificent and easily the best part of the film, some the fights are just so brutal, it is wicked. The acting is great, Haley as Rorschach is simply amazing and both Morgan & Wilson are also excellent as the Comedian and Nite Owl respectively. Even Akerman did a respectable job as Silk Spectre which surprised me considering she hasn't done much in her career. The movie never is dull, the plot is always compelling however some scenes do run a little long from time to time and the CGI is stellar. Even with all my praise, the movie is still a slight disappointment only because while Snyder did a fantastic job in adapting the novel, the changes he made to it were for the worst. The sex scene in this film is ridiculous, running way too long and is laughable and while the ending changes worked, it still wasn't as satisfying as the novel's. Overall, I really enjoyed Watchmen, the acting is very good (Haley as Rorschach = brilliant) and Snyder's direction is excellent but it just is victim to its own hype in that it just can't live up to the graphic novel. With that said, I definitely recommend seeing it..... just read the novel after for the true Watchmen experience.
(The Director’s Cut adds about 24 extra minutes to the feature. I found most of them to be just filler containing Laurie (Akerman) however they do add one key scene that is important and I was happy to see it be added into the film. In the end, the Director’s Cut didn’t really change my opinion about the movie.)

The PQ is simply fantastic; Watchmen is filled with such spectacular visuals and the transfer does them justice. Detail is exceptional though-out and I was impressed by the colors; they’re vibrant and give the image a great 3D effect to it. Contrast is natural and while there is a thin layer of grain, it never is intrusive and the image is very sharp. The audio is also superb, WB makes the switch from Dolby True HD to DTS HD and at least on my system, it makes a big difference. The action sequences sounded amazing, powerful and dynamic yet it never gets too loud. The track has excellent balance to it and dialogue was always front & clear. This will a stellar new demo disc for audiophiles. There is a ton of good extras that touch on both the movie and the history of the Watchmen graphic novel. I personally enjoyed the featurette looking at how the graphic novel changed the comic industry the most but there is a lot of in depth BTS and WB also provided us with a digital copy of the film. (Side note: Sadly, I don’t have a Profile 1.1 player so I wasn’t able to check out the PiP track which I heard was awesome but they do allow you to watch some of it as individual featurettes which I thank them for.)
Lets’ face the facts, Watchmen never could compare to the beyond brilliant graphic novel however, if you just take it as a movie, it is a great, complex film with strong performances from the entire cast and outstanding direction by Zack Snyder. WB has done a tremendous job bringing Watchmen to Blu-ray. The PQ is excellent, extras are very good and the audio is top-notch, demo material. Overall, I would recommend adding Watchmen to your collection but beware that WB has announced a special edition of Watchmen to be released around Christmas so you might just want rent this version and wait for that set to avoid double dipping.

Outstanding blu-ray

Wow, great movie. I just finished reading the comics and this is a faithful adaptation, some scenes look exactly like the comic which was interesting. The PQ was amazing, Warner has really stepped up to the game and brought us an awesome transfer. The movie looks sharp, colorful, and detailed; i didn't notice any dnr Warner was known for doing so that makes me a happy camper! The AQ is on the same level, not a moment of weakness, Warner should definately stick with Dts hd ma from now on because this track was awesome, loud, clear, clear bass, etc. Too bad The Dark Knight missed out on a track like this. Overall, great movie but don't expect to see another spiderman because you won't.

Director's Cut Improves What is Already a Good Adaptation to a Great A

This film is about superheroes in the real world and how they would survive in a society very similar to ours. This movie gets better with every viewing, though it's still not in the same league as The Dark Knight. The biggest issue I have with this film is some of Zach Snyder's stylistic choices of making this film look like a comic book film. One of the main points of the original graphic novel were how Superheroes would work in the real world and Zach Snyder and the other people involved in making the film used every chance they could get to make this look like a comic book world. It had cartoony aging makeup, slow-mo action sequences, and stylized fighting. That being said, I thought the acting and the writing were really good, especially the actors who played Rorschach, Nite Owl II, and The Comedian. The writers did a great job adapting a 12 issue Graphic Novel into a nearly 3 hour movie, but I'm looking forward to the Director's Cut that is rumored to have between 30 and 40 minutes of additional footage tacked on. Some of the things I thought the movie nailed were Rorschach's story arch, Dr. Manhattan's origin, and they managed to improve Nite Owl II's arch. I've heard that Dr. Manhattan's prominent pecker has been a big distracting factor for some people watching the movie, but I didn't really notice it except for a few scenes and it didn't bug me, it was really easy to ignore. The Director's Cut is what should have been released in theaters during the films initial run. This has around 20 to 25 minutes of added footage, and the those scenes just expand character development, patch plot holes, and get rid of just about all of my issues with the theatrical cut. The PQ is excellent, preserving exactly what the film should look like when watching it on the digital screen. The AQ is also top notch and the extras are really good, especially the in movie experience.

Disapointing extras, but memorable film

Whether you like the movie or not, you have to admit that Watchmen is something else. The gutsiest movie in recent memory. It's commercial suicide: 3 hours, very little action, no defined good or bad characters, and a morally ambiguous ending. It doesn't pander to the small children and morons in the audience. It has subtlety and complexity. I'm not sure I'd call it a masterpiece, but I have nothing but respect for it. A very refreshing experience after having to put up with moronic crap like Transformers. The Director's Cut is a significantly better film than the Theatrical cut. The pacing works so much better now, and a lot of the character arcs are more clear.

PQ was a bit pixely in places, especially in Doctor Manhattan scenes. But a very solid transfer.

I was a little disappointed with the extras. The Director Walk-Ons were just kind of a gimmick, and they were few and far between. Disc 2 had one great extra about the graphic novel, but the rest was forgettable.

Good blind buy

I'm not a comic book fan and never heard of the Watchmen until the movie came out. Bought as a blind buy based on the spot on review here and cheap price I got it for. Extra disc came in just barely over an hour which is a waste of space for a Bluray disc. Digital copy included though and extra feature maximum movie mode is a cool way to watch movie the second time around. Awesome PQ and AQ to a very long movie just over 3 hours.

Toon's Review: Watchmen - 9/10

http://toonstar.wordpress.com/2009/05/29/watchmen/

Movie Review:

A faithful and phenomenal execution of a graphic novel adaptation.

I find it very difficult to explain to someone just exactly what Watchmen is about. From its various trailers, it appears to by a stylistic action piece of untold levels of cinematography. Unfortunately this is the work of many marketing machines churning a mass media product out of what is in fact the perfect unison of fine art and literature I have seen in a long time.

The story of Watchmen is, at it’s a core, a richly layered character piece driven by the narrative of one vigilante known as Rorschach. Set in an alternate 1985, through the story we encounter a world on the brink of nuclear war. The struggle for infinite power between America and USSR has caused the proliferation of a nuclear Armageddon an imminent and inevitable reality. We follow the paths of a group of masked vigilantes known as the Watchmen trying to salvage a world lost in fear, as they begin to question their own existence in light of murderous and psychological attacks coordinated against them. I am not going to bother to try and explain the precedents each character faces, it took Alan Moore four hundred hand drawn pages, and so two hours and thirty minutes of film is hardly an even match.

This film was visually a masterpiece deserving of the highest praises, it was translated from mere paper to film with extraordinary style and depth. Any complaints regarding the Watchmen film to be overly loyal to the point that the movie exhibits zero creativity is completely absurd and ridiculous. Zack Snyder was tasked with bringing still images soundless sentences to life, the execution of such a fitting soundtrack accompanying marvellously detailed set pieces and props was the work of exceptional direction. I must nod my head and fist-bump Zack Snyder in this regard. This film is almost frighteningly creepy in its evocation of the graphic novel, almost as if Snyder was walking around the set with the graphic novel in his hand rather than the script. The style to which it was exhibited was a stroke of pure genius; the voices, the debonair of the characters and the cinematography were an implementation of mere perfection. Every scene is brimming to life with surreal sense of colour and grit.

The soundtrack is mellow with an almost Bob Dylan-esque suave to it. Consider the fact that the action of the film was perhaps more suited to something sounding more robust with bass and coloured with guitar riffs, then you will see the brilliant oxymoron in the feel of this film. I was slightly taken aback, at the silence in the opening fight scene only for it to develop in to one of the most solemn and effectively photographed scenes I have ever witnessed. The following stop-motion captured flashbacks of the Minutemen was just an astounding sounding and looking five minutes that showed a lot of interesting moments from the book. The Kennedy assassination deserves a special mention, beautiful. What proceeded for the next two hours plus, was easily the most powerful and architecturally captured fight scenes filmed this side of Snyder’s very own ‘300’. Rorschach was visceral and decisive in his blows (keep away from boiling fat, and the Men’s Room when this dude is around); Silk Spectre was graceful and powerful while Nite Owl was a clinical combatant. However none were any match for the outstanding Ozymandias, I have no idea how this man’s absolute strength and agility was so effectively captured as he literally annihilated every single opponent with sadistic ease. Fantastic, it makes the fight scenes in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight’ look like a collection of claustrophobic seniors feeling each other up in dark corridors.

The predicament of this film arises from a number of flaws; if you have not read the book then I beg your mercy for the praise I wish to heap upon this is of the highest order. There was an impossibly fine line that the Snyder had to meander across. Firstly there are the dastardly compulsive aficionados of the Alan Moore novel, who will (and rightly so) complain that critical pieces of character development were abandoned or the ending was ludicrously changed from the original. However both were a necessary sacrifice to keep this movie with in a decent time range, which honestly was still extremely long. So let us follow on to the general populous, the demographic of any Hollywood product. In the eyes of these people ‘Watchmen’ was long, it was boring, Nite Owl had a bigger booty than Silk Spectre, big naked blue man and Richard Nixon… All valid complaints, I did at a point admittedly think to myself that a lot of people must be getting really bored right about now, especially if you did not realise the ultimate direction of the narrative. Such was a similar problem with Lord of the Rings, but Peter Jackson had about ten hours of film and three years to flesh it out over and sprinkle healthy doses of adventure and action to keep the casuals engaged. ‘Watchmen’ was flooded with pretentious commentary and political stances that many would have perceived as drivel rather than meaningful moral speech. A second viewing of this film is highly recommended, if not only to see Rorschach drive a cleaver through pedophiles head, but to notice the exceptional dimension and commentary of the characters.

Speaking of which, characters were pieces of literary genius, and it was absolutely amazing seeing them come to life and be delivered with such fervour and excellence. Rorschach, portrayed by Jackie Early Haley was simply a scene stealer and there is no arguing that no matter what you thought of the movie. Much of his complex background and development was abandoned in the running time of the film, so therefore he simply appeared to be psychopath with a ****** up a childhood. However he is so much more than that… the story of his black and white perception of the world, the mask and his early school years are just fascinating pieces of literature which unfortunately most people will never get to experience. Ozymandias was also an exceptionally delivered character played by Matthew Goode, however again due to lack of dedicated screen time the general audience could not delve in to this man’s extraordinary past as a child who rejected the fortunes of his family and instead chose to educate himself with the life of Alexander the Great. He followed the journey of Alexander across the Mesopotamia, Africa and Asia in order to mould himself in to the most powerful human being on the planet. His aspirations and successes were poignantly delivered and his martial arts were a sight to behold.

So, should you be watching the ‘Watchmen’? The answer is a resounding yes, if only to experience a grandioso cinematic event. ‘Watchmen’ contains some of finest choreography in combat as well as an unusually mellow soundtrack, the culmination of which is a very unique film. Forgive the complex narrative structure for the source material is so rich and complete in its portrayal of this universe that two and a half hours are almost an injustice to it. Or if you have read the book, then forgive it for being only that long.

At the end of the movie, the majority of the audience stood up in applause… A young man sitting behind me remarked “What kind of a person claps at the end of a movie!?” to which a colleague of mine promptly replied “A loser!” This is the kind of person claps at the end of a movie… the kind of person who realises that bringing this piece of art to life took almost sixteen years of debate and three years of dedication to construct, fabricate and enact. Countless hours of work of hundreds of individuals, for which the end result was the most faithful adaptation of any source material, ever. I can, I swear to you, sit down and watch this movie with the graphic novel in my hand, minute by minute and page by page to see mere images and words painted twenty four years ago come to life before my eyes. What an experience.

Blu-Ray:

- This film on Blu-Ray is simply outstanding. The picture quality is exceptional, as is is expected in WB transfers. The audio was the real standout for me, it punctuates each detail so well. I'm sure that is more of a testament to how perfectly this film was made, but it was just great hearing such crisp sounding action and soundtrack. The speech is also well maintained and clear through the center channel, never obnoxiously over powered by the other elements in the audio track. The extra's are very interesting, I never usually bother to watch extras but I'm an avid fan of Watchmen and I found myself going through every piece. Also, its great seeing filmmakers ensure that these supplements are delivered in HD as well now. I still haven't watched the film in Maximum Movie mode - which is suppose to include a funky multi-screen walk-through with Zack Snyder, but from what I hear it is a very informative run through.

- All in all, brilliant. Director's Cut makes this near perfect movie in to a perfect movie. Couldn't have asked for a more pristine Blu-Ray edition either, instant purchase.

A great film based on a great graphic novel.

There is not much I can say about this Blu-Ray disc that nobody else hasn't already said. I never had the out of sync problemss that others where complaining about. Another great Blu-Ray disc from Warner Bros. The only complaint I have, is opening up the case an seeing an add for the "Ultimate Edtion" coming out in December.

What an experience!

I didn't know what to expect when I viewed this movie. I knew nothing and I mean nothing about WATCHMEN, I just watched it with an open mind. I was really blown away at he depth of the characters esp., Dr. Manhattan and Rorshach.(I Imagine the sequel will speak to thier backgrounds). Dr. Manhattan was such a somber yet fascinating character and Rorshack was a, "Its black or its white", kinda guy so his demise was quite fitting. The story was very engaging and the violence, while over the top really set a tone throughout the movie. I very rarely give movies a five but this one was so refreshingly different than any superhero movie that I had to give it a five. Can't wait to watch it again. Great job on the BD Warner Bros. Whens the sequel?

Great Movie

Great story and great adaptation of the Graphic Novel.

Video 5/5, Audio 5/5

Special Features 3/5, the 'Maximum Movie Mode' wasnt all that it was hyped up to be, sure, Zack comes on screen everynow and then to point out something that might be considered 'triva' to someone. Pop-up videos appear throughout the film, and some you can exit out of the movie to watch in full. Still galleries are boring, and the timeline is useless. Im not a fan of these PiP tracks. I've just watched the film, do I really have to sit through it again to see some behind-the-scenes stuff? Always make some kind of index so people can skip directly to the stuff.

Disc 2 is a let down, you get 3 featurettes, that dont shed anymore light on the making of the film, and a music video... wow.. dont go all out here!

buy it for the movie, not for the special features.
