We Eere Soldiers
The PQ could have been better, but all around it captured what it set out to do, tell the story of the 7th Cavalry's first battle in Vietnam. It is a hard look at the reality of war and the sacrifices that the U.S. soldiers and their families made. |

A story worth the telling.
The video master isn't quite as transparent as I hoped, but despite being lossy, the sound easily makes up for it. Incredibly immersive, it puts you right on the battlefield. |

Best movie ever
I think that since the defeat of HD DVD's, we will see more good movies come to Blu Ray. I used to have this movie on HD and it looked bad coming from the crappy xbox 360. now that i have 2 PS3's both a 1080p, it looks and sounds allot better. Overall great movie. |

Great movie, barely average PQ
This was another movie I picked up for fairly cheap ($19.99 CDN) and so I consider it worth it because it's a good solid vietnam war movie with a great battle story, but this isn't going to be the type of movie you show off to your friends about how good a blu-ray looks.
The picture quality isn't great, with the main issue being unintentional grain, it's just so grainy all around, noticeable especially in sky-scenes or anywhere without alot of stuff going on to distract you.
I would say if you already own it on DVD, don't bother replacing it, but if you see it for 10-15 bucks sometime, pick it up since it's such a good movie |

Great Movie, Average video quality
The background noise was just to much for this PQ to be demo quality. There was grain at points to but usually not on the flesh or close ups mostly in the background. Some shots were better then other for sure, there were plenty of times when it was nice and clear and others when it was dull.
It certainly didn't hurt to get it on blu-ray, still better then the DVD, for colors and clarity. |

Great movie with sub-par video and audio
First off let me say that this is one of my favorite war movies of all time. I owned this previously on DVD and I have seen it at least a half dozen times.
PQ - The picture quality on this one was rather disappointing. I don't mind grain and actually prefer if over DNR. However, the image was soft throughout most the picture and quite honestly was only marginally better than my upscaled DVD of this movie. I would say that this and 28 Days are the worst Blu-rays I own in regards to picture quality. Both on Blu-ray only offer a slight upgrade from an upscaled DVD.
AQ -I first knocked one point off for no lossless track. I then knocked a second point off becuase I had to frequently adjust the volume. The action scenes were great and you feel like your in the movie. The dialog during these scenes is suprisingly good as well. The problem is when you go to the non action scenes you can barely hear the dialogue. Hence my one point deduction for this issue. I also knocked another point off for a flaw in the DTS audio track. I noticed towards the end of the movie that I was getting audio spikes. A couple of examples are when Mel Gibson returns home to his wife at the door and when the credits were rolling. I noted that my Pioneer Elite receiver was stating +4 for volume, it would go up for a second or two and then back down. This typically takes place at the begginning of the movie and I know it is encoded within the Blu-ray. I noticed this issue about 3 - 4 times so I was kind and only deducted one star for this issue.
Extras - Basically the same as the DVD release. Nothing really to add here other than the fact they are average in quantity. However, the content on the commentaries and some of the special features are really good.
Overall - If you have the DVD and a good to high-end upscaling DVD player then this is probably not worth an upgrade. However, I highly recommend this movie on Blu-ray or DVD. |

worst video
Why in gods name is a blu-ray encoded with mpeg ?!!! There is no reason to do this. Well except to save money. This is by far the worst blu-ray conversion i have ever seen. It has more grain than the bagels i eat for breakfast. If you have this move on regular DVD like some others suggested just keep it in case they make a remastered copy. I think the audio is a lot better than most blu-rays ive come across. I didnt have the movie on regular so i just picked it up on blu-ray but i hope they make a remastered copy since this is a very god movie |

Solid war movie with of impressive range.
I liked this movie. Has everything a war movie should contain, with the added dimension of some focus on the wives and families left at home. Its not perfect, and at times can be a bit over sentimental, but its immersive nontheless.
The cast is great, with plenty of talented actors on hand to add some credibility to their roles.
The Blu-Ray, as described in the review is a technical quandry.
The picture quality is sometimes grainy and washed out, but for the most part i thought it looked very good. It is a war picture, and the "aged" look is the style that they tend to be filmed in. I compared it to my old DVD, and it was far more detailed and vibrant.
Sound was somewhat unusual. The UK version say DTS Matrix 6.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 on the back of the box. On the front of the box however, there is a DTS Master logo.
When i watched the film, happily it came up DTS Master on my receivers display.
The loud portions of the movie sounded very good indeed, with lots of sub and surround activity. Where it lost out was in dialogue. It all seems too quiet, and scenes where there is dialogue on the battlefield can barely be heard at all over the sounds of war.
I'm making it sound worse than it is, but it was frustrating at times. I again compared it to the DVD, and it too had sound issues of a similar nature, so it could be put down to the source material.
Still a worthy disc if you like war movies. |

Must for War Film fans...
We Were Soldiers was a solid movie depicting a time that has not had quite the amount of epic movies like WWII. While by no means on the same level as a Saving Private Ryan, Mel Gibson leads a good cast and has great cinematography. The video helps capture this and the audio does a great job of enhancing the conflict compared to the DVD. Extras are a bit bland but for the right price a great addition to the collection. |

amazing movie on dvd ... OUTSTANDING on BLU-Ray
watching this movie in 1080p w/ cranked up audio of gun shots and everything thats going on make's you almost feel like you are right there. Great great movie. I'd have paid 40$ for it. This movie gives you such insite into why they Nam war wasnt smart, shows you just how bad war is and really makes you appriciate everything you have. great Tribute at the end to our Soilders who fell at this battle.. Great great movie, unlike other war movies because it gives an insite into what the families back home were going thru.. A+ |

Mpeg 2 and VC1 not as good as AVC Mpeg 4
Mpeg 2 and VC1 codec’s are the same. They are not as good as AVC Mpeg 4. It cost the studio less to master these in Mpeg 2 and VC1 so unless they have a reason such as the movies sell better when encoded in AVC Mpeg 4 then they will continue. We should be demanding that the Bluray Association make AVC Mpeg 4 the standard so we get the same quality no mater which disc we buy. I don't know about you, but I feel cheated when the quality is inferior. Make your purchases more carefully, and you reduce the number of badly master movies. The first place I look is the codec used during Mastering. For the most part most studios’s are using AVC and doing a good job. Warner seems to need the most improvement when it comes to producing a quality Master for Bluray duplication. Now that they are Bluray exclusive I hope they will up grade and improve there processes and we can start getting some reference grade Bluray Discs from the biggest studio in the world. The reviewer of this site is a little to generous with his PQ and Audio reviews and will find that in the long run it will not serve him well, as it will damage his credibility when someone makes a purchase without credible information and is unhappy with the PQ or Audio Quality. I'm sure there is a lot of pressure to make good reviews to improve sales, but once you lose your credibility you become nothing more than a windbag that nobody will listen to, or take with a grain of salt. Not a good place to take your career. Be tuff on quality, as that is how we improve and try harder. |
