Sleeping Beauty Restoration Web Conference

Recently, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment held a web conference on the extensive restoration process of the monumental animated feature film 'Sleeping Beauty,' and Blu-ray.com was in attendance. Tropic Thunder Announced for Blu-ray (UPDATED)

Dreamworks Entertainment in conjunction with Paramount Home Entertainment have announced that they will bring the summer comedy hit 'Tropic Thunder' to Blu-ray on November 18th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The unrated Director's Cut of this film will be presented in 1080p video accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Warner Announces Being There for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Petter Sellers film 'Being There: 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition' to Blu-ray on February 3rd, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. No technical specs or special features have been announced at this time. It is also unknown if this title will receive the digibook treatment similar to other classic Warner titles.

Bangkok Dangerous and Disaster Movie for January

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Nicholas Cage film 'Bangkok Dangerous' and the comedy 'Disaster Movie' to Blu-ray on January 6th, day-and-date with the DVD releases. No technical specs have been announced at this time, though you can expect to see similar 1080p video and DTS-HD Master Audio treatment as other Lionsgate releases.

Basketball Documentary Coming to Blu-ray

Oscilloscope Laboratories has announced that they will bring the basketball documentary 'Gunnin' for That #1 Spot' to Blu-ray on October 21st, day-and-date with the DVD release. Directed by Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, this film follows eight young basketball players as they try prove that they are the best in the world.

The Dark Knight Pre-Order is Up

Amazon.com has just begun taking pre-orders for the highly anticipated Blu-ray release of 'The Dark Knight', which is due to hit store shelves on December 9th. As the currently highest grossing film of 2008, and designated as an instant classic by reviewers and viewers alike, this is one Blu-ray release that you surely shouldn't miss.

More Fox Blu-ray Titles Coming in January

In an early announcement to retailers, Fox Home Entertainment has revealed a series of Blu-ray titles scheduled to hit store shelves in January of next year. On January 13th, along with the previously announced 'The Boondock Saints', Fox will release 'Drumline'. A week later, on January 20th, they will release 'Antwone Fisher' and 'Unfaithful'. One January 27th, the original 'The Pink Panther' will be released.

Boondock Saints Coming to Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the cult action film 'The Boondock Saints' to Blu-ray on January 13th. While this film only hit five theaters during its theatrical release, it become a home video smash as fans loudly praised the story of Irish twins who go on a crusade to rid Boston of crime.

Iron Man Sells Half Million Units on Blu-ray

According to retailer reports, the Blu-ray version of 'Iron Man' sold 260,000 copies on its first day of sale - a record for the Blu-ray format - and has sold over 500,000 copies in its first week of sales, becoming the highest selling Blu-ray title of the year. Coming in a distant second on the Blu-ray sales chart was the Blu-ray release of 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall'.

MVD Goes Blu-ray

MVD Entertainment Group has announced that they will release their first three Blu-ray titles on October 28th, with more planned for 2009. No technical specs or special features have been announced for any of the first three films, which include 'Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter', 'Blackalicious: 420 Live in Seattle' and 'Cannibal Taboo'. No titles have been announced for 2009 at this time.

BD-Live Conference Next Week in San Fran

The Producers Guild of America has announced that they will hold a conference in San Fransisco, CA called "Blu-ray Gets Connected: Creative Possibilities for BD-Live". The event, which is being held at Pixar Animation Studios, will take place on October 15th from 7-9PM. It will focus on BD-Live production and feature many big name players from Hollywood.

Battlestar Galactica Coming to Blu-ray

Netflix Raises Rates for Blu-ray Purchases

In an email sent to subscribers yesterday, the popular web-based movie renter Netflix altered that they would be applying a one dollar surcharge to those members who rent Blu-ray titles beginning with the next billing cycle. Netflix had been floating the idea for many months, including increasing monthly fees to a select test group.

Third Annual High-Def Conference in November

Traitor; Surfer Dude Announced for Blu-ray

Iron Man Destroys Blu-ray Retail Records

According to various retail sources, on average, 20% of all 'Iron Man' discs that were sold last week were on the Blu-ray format. For Internet-based stores, that percentage climbed to an astounding 50%. While final unit sales data has yet to be reported, it is expected that 'Iron Man' is the highest selling Blu-ray yet.

Blu-ray 2008: The Studio Report Card

As most Blu-ray fans known, not all studios are equal when it comes to Blu-ray releases. Some, like Sony Pictures, have consistently released outstanding Blu-ray offerings, while others, like MGM, have much room for improvement. Reviewer Kenneth Brown has written a Studio Report Card for Sound & Vision Magazine, and while his observations will not be surprising to any Blu-ray fan, it is interesting to see direct comparisons made between the studios.

Prince Caspian Announced for UK Release

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment UK has announced that they will bring 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian' to Blu-ray on November 17th in the UK, day-and-date with the DVD release. Similar to the US release, video will be presented in 1080p AVC accompanied by a 24-bit 7.1 PCM soundtrack.

Fearless Announced for Blu-ray Release

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announce that they will bring Jet Li's 'Fearless' to Blu-ray on December 9th. This title is the latest from the studio that was originally on the HD DVD format, and is now coming out for Blu-ray. Video will be presented in 1080p accompanied by a Mandarin 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack (an English dub will also be available) all on a BD-50.

Lord of the Rings in 2009

I'm a little hesitant to post this, mostly because even the whisper of The One Ring coming to Blu-ray causes the most Fonz-esqe guy to geek out (maybe the Ring is real?), but according to material found in the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Poltergiest' (and other upcoming Warner Blu-ray titles), at least the first part of the Lord of the Rings will be coming to Blu-ray in 2009.

European Release Dates for Q1 2009

Now that we are in the full swing of Q4, movie studios are already starting to think about what they will release next year. This is also true for Europe, where they always seem to be a little more forthcoming about their future release schedules. What we found, was that Sony is going to be very aggressive with their catalog titles, and Warner is going to keep riding that billion dollar franchise featuring a bat.

Integra Releases First Blu-ray Player

Integra has announced that they have released their first Blu-ray player, the Integra DBS-6.9. This BonusView compatible player supports 1080p24 video playback, as well as bitstream of both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio sound formats via HDMI v1.3a output. The player will also include an SD card slot on the front panel for additional media support.

Zodiac Finally Announced for Blu-ray

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the David Fincher film 'Zodiac: Director's Cut' to Blu-ray on January 27th. As of right now, the specs match that of the previous HD DVD release (Dolby Digital Plus soundtrack), but we expect that to be corrected to be a Dolby TrueHD track shortly, similar to other Paramount Blu-ray titles.

Quo Vadis Hits Japan in November

Warner Home Video Japan has revealed through a retailer report that they will bring the 1951 classic 'Quo Vadis' to Blu-ray on November 19th in Japan. Additionally, they release 'Poltergeist' on the same day in its non-digibook form (for those who prefer to not buy those discs). Both discs are expected to be the same as their US releases.
