Managed Copy on Discs before Players

Managed copy, the BD feature that enables consumers to make one copy of any Blu-ray Disc they buy, comes into effect on December 4, and most BD titles released after that date will support it. However, there are no players able to make those backups and thus the Advanced Access Content System License Administrator (AACS-LA), which also is in charge of managed copy, is delaying some requirements for studios until the second quarter of next year.

Rumor: Lord of the Rings BD in February 2010

After all the pre-announcements, delays and whatnot, everybody is allowed to be a little leery of any more unofficial information regarding 'The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy'. However, it must be noted that UK retailer The Hut has now it back up for preorder with a release date of February 8, 2010. So does its associate website SendIt.

Universal Details Atonement Blu-ray

Following up on our announcement yesterday, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Atonement', which is scheduled to hit store shelves on January 26th. Coming on a BD-50, video will be presented in 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Pride & Prejudice Blu-ray Gets Detailed

Bonnie and Clyde Get Non-Digibook Release

Warner Home Video has announced that they will re-release 'Bonnie and Clyde' for Blu-ray on February 2nd in standard Blu-ray packaging. The original release was the first Warner title to be released in DigiBook packaging, though not the first Digibook title to be re-released in standard packaging. It is expected that both releases will feature the exact same discs.

Rumor: Road to Perdition Blu-ray Coming Soon

One of our fellow forum members from Denmark is telling us that he has scored a copy of the Blu-ray of 'Fight Club', which includes a trailer for 'Road to Perdition', labeling it as "coming soon." Note that despite being a Dreamworks title, this movie is distributed in Europe by the local branch of 20th Century Fox.

Optimum's January-March Blu-ray Slate

Optimum Home Entertainment is set to release over a dozen films on Blu-ray in the UK between January and March 2010. Titles run the gamut of genres, from Nouvelle vague to George A. Romero's latest zombie escapade to 1970s erotica. No information on disc specs, special features or region coding is available at this time.

Get Your Name on the Paranormal Activity Blu-ray

'Paranormal Activity' doesn't have a BD release date yet; in fact, it is still enjoying a successful theatrical run. However, in preparation for that, Paramount Pictures is thanking the legion of moviegoers who helped to make the $15,000 movie a hit by featuring their names in the credits of the film's DVD and Blu-ray editions.

Luxo Drops Suit Against UP Blu-ray Release

As we reported in August, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will be offering a limited edition 'Up: Luxo Jr. Collectible Desk Lamp Set' which features a working replica of the now famous Luxo lamp along with the Blu-ray release of 'UP' when the title is released on Tuesday. Soon after the announcement, Luxo AS - the manufacturer of the Luxo lamp - sued Disney for trademark infringement.

Star Trek Retail Exclusive Announced

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the list of retail exclusives for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Star Trek', which is scheduled to hit store shelves on November 17th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Like other big title releases as of late, those fans looking to pick-up a unique version of the 'Star Trek' Blu-ray will have to plan their release day traveling accordingly.

Pride & Prejudice (2005) Coming to Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring the Keira Knightley film 'Pride & Prejudice' to Blu-ray on January 26th. Not to be confused with the 1995 BBC miniseries of the same name, which was released on Blu-ray earlier this year, this 2005 motion picture is coming to Blu-ray for the first time.

Universal Does Atonement for Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release 'Atonement' on Blu-ray on January 26, 2010. No disc details are available at the moment. 'Atonement' is a drama set in pre-WWII Britain, based on a novel by Ian McEwan and starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. It was nominated to seven Academy Awards and won one (best music).

Rumor: BD-exclusive Content for Alien Anthology

Our friends at The Digital Bits have confirmed with "studio and industry sources" that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release the 'Alien' anthology on Blu-ray during 2010, so it seems that the studio would not wait for Ridley Scott's future reboot/prequel. Reportedly, this set will include all four films in the series, all of the bonus content from the 'Alien Quadrilogy' DVD box set bonus content and substantial new, BD-exclusive material as well.

Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet BD in March 2010

The flier that comes with the latest releases by Fox Pathé Europa features two Baz Luhrmann movies labeled as coming to Blu-ray in France in March 2010: 'Moulin Rouge! – Music Extravaganza Edition' and 'Romeo + Juliet – Music Edition'. No release details are available at this time, and the date must be considered unofficial until there is an announcement by the studio.

Coraline Blu-ray Gift Set Announced

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced the release of a 'Coraline' Blu-ray gift set for December 8. This limited-edition set will include, apart from the contents already featured in the existing Blu-ray release, a set of postcards and a book titled "Getting Things Right", giving Henry Selick's insights into inspiration, process and production of the movie.

View Forensics Conferences with CSI and BD-Live

Owners of 'CSI: The Ninth Season' on Blu-ray can now access exclusive video coverage from two forensic conferences directly from the disc's BD-Live portal. CBS Home Entertainment had teams onsite at the CSI: Regis University Conference in Denver, Colorado and the annual conference of the American College of Forensic Examiners in Las Vegas, Nevada, filming crime scene re-enactments, CSI gear demonstrations, investigator interviews and more.

Begun, the Blu-ray hardware price wars have. Only yesterday
we told you that Wal-Mart would offer the Sony BDP-S360 for $148 starting this weekend. Now Amazon has reduced the price of the upper-tier Panasonic DMP-BD80 to $157.81 at the time of writing. That is to say, a first-brand BD player, with BonusView and BD-Live, advanced audio decoding, video streaming and multichannel analog audio outputs can be had for under $160.

The Final Destination in 3-D Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video, in conjunction with New Line Home Entertainment, has announced the Blu-ray release of 'The Final Destination' for January 5, 2010, day-and-date with the DVD. The BD edition of the latest movie in this teen-horror series will include the movie in 2-D and 3-D versions (for viewing with anaglyph glasses), as well as a digital copy of the movie.

Wizard of Oz Emerald Edition BD Gets Wide Release

Warner Home Video has announced 'The Wizard of Oz: Emerald Edition' for release on Blu-ray on December 1. When Victor Fleming's classic was released on September 29, this three-disc, no-frills set was originally a retailer exclusive, available only at Target stores. Now all bricks-and-mortar and Internet retailers will be able to stock it.

Halo Legends on Blu-ray in February

Stop press! Soon you'll be able to play Halo on your PS3 – well, actually play a Halo BD on your PS3. Warner Home Video is set to release 'Halo Legends' on Blu-ray on February 9, 2010, day-and-date with the DVD. The Blu-ray will include several hours of special features, including a BD-exclusive overview of the Halo universe up until the end of Halo 3.

BD Sales: Oct 26-Nov 1 – Transformers Stays on Top

In its second week, 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' topped again the Blu-ray charts, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan Firsrt Alert. The Transformers sequel sold over 50% more copies on BD than the runner-up, 'Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs' (which was the bestseller in packaged media overall).

Blu-ray Popularity Continues to Grow

At Blu-Con 2.0 yesterday in Los Angeles, a number of Blu-ray stats were revealed to wet the appetites of executives looking the capitalize on the high definition format. Among them was that Blu-ray is now one of the top 10 consumer electronics products most wanted by adults for the holiday season. This is the first time Blu-ray has made the list, and it matches the amount of time it took for DVD to make the list (4 years).

Pre-Black Friday Walmart Blu-ray Deal

Super Bowl XLIV Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Super Bowl XLIV Champions' to Blu-ray on March 9th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have not been announced at this time. Obviously, with the Super Bowl scheduled for February 7th, no word on which NFL team will be featured on the release.

Gremlins and Green Mile See Expanded Release

Warner Home Video has announced that they will release 'Gremlins' and 'The Green Mile' for Blu-ray on December 1st. Both of these titles have been available exclusively at certain retailers (Target got 'Gremlins' while Best Buy has 'The Green Mile'), but both titles will be available at every Blu-ray retailer starting December 1st.

Warner Announces Valentine's Day Blu-ray Price Drops

Warner Home Video has announced a number of female-focused Blu-ray titles that will see their suggest retail prices (SRP) drop to $19.89 on January 19th, just in time for Valentine's Day. The decrease in SRP should result in retail prices of between $12-15, depending on your retailer preference. Some titles, like 'The Wedding Singer: Totally Awesome Edition', can already be had in the sub-$10 price range, so don't expect to see any price change for those titles.
