HBO is bringing HBO Films and Academy Award-nominated director Philip Kaufman's Hemingway & Gellhorn to Blu-ray this spring. The period drama stars Clive Owen as literary master Ernest Hemingway and Nicole Kidman as trailblazing war correspondent Martha Gelhorn, and comes to Blu-ray on March 19, 2013.
The film recounts the passionate love affair and tumultuous marriage of Hemingway and Gellhorn, tracking the adventurous writers through the Spanish Civil War and beyond. The combined magnetism of Hemingway and Gellhorn gained the couple access to social circles that included the elite of Hollywood, the aristocracy of the literary world and the First Family of the United States. As witnesses to history, they covered all the great conflicts of their time. Alas, the war they couldn't survive was the war between themselves.
Special features include:
Audio Commentary with Kaufman and editor Walter Murch
Making Hemingway & Gellhorn
Behind the Visual Effects Featurette
Hemingway & Gellhorn also stars David Strathairn, Rodrigo Santoro, Molly Parker, Santiago Cabrera, Parker Posey, Lars Ulrich, Saverio Guerra, Peter Coyote, Joan Chen and Tony Shalhoub. The film is executive produced by Peter Kaufman, Trish Hofmann, James Gandolfini, Alexandra Ryan and Barbara Turner.
I cannot think of anyone less suitable to be Martha Gelhorn than Nicole Kidman, or for that matter less suited to be Hemingway than Clive Owen. Only someone who has never read either, and knows nothing about either or the times they lived in, could enjoy this silly film, which is it seems, almost as ludicrous as the Hopkins starrer "Hitchcock" and Lindsay Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor.
