Image Entertainment and 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks have announced the Blu-ray release
of Red
Hook Summer, the latest from Spike Lee. The film stars Clarke Peters (The
Wire, Damages), Nate Parker (The Great Debaters, Arbitrage),
Thomas Jefferson Byrd (Ray, He Got Game) and introduces both Jules Brown
and Toni Lysaith. Street date is December 21, 2012.
The latest in Spike Lee's Chronicles of Brooklyn (which also include She's Gotta Have
It, Do The Right Thing, Crooklyn and He Got Game), Red
Hook Summer tells the story of Flik Royale, a sullen boy from middle-class Atlanta who
has come to spend the summer with the religious grandfather he's never met before, Bishop
Enoch Rouse, in the housing projects of Red Hook. Things quickly get off on the wrong foot,
as Bishop Enoch relentlessly attempts to convert Flik into a follower of Jesus Christ. Between
his grandfather's constant preaching and the culture shock of inner-city life, Flik's summer
appears to be a total disaster--until he meets Chazz Morningstar, a pretty girl his age, who
shows Flik the brighter side of Brooklyn. Through both the love of his new found friend and,
eventually, his grandfather, Flik begins to realize that the world is a lot bigger than he'd ever
imagined.
The Blu-ray is expected to include a Director's Commentary with Spike Lee, a behind-the-
scenes featurette and a music video.
The film's stars were in more recent films than this post indicates. Clark Peters currently stars in the HBO series Treme. Nate Parker starred in the George Lucas produced film Red Tails.
Review: Great movie! Controversial, provocative, touching, funny & sad...the way only Spike can do it. This movie is classic Spike Lee. And even though he financed this himself, there is no lack in picture or sound quality whatsoever. I can't speak for the quality of the blu-ray release, but I pre-ordered it & will update this once I view it.
So if you're tired of the same ole Hollywood films & want something different and original, I recommend Red Hook Summer.
