Independent distributors Well Go USA have revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray director Ann Hui's A Simple Life (2011), starring Andy Lau, Deannie Yip and Lawrence Ah Mon. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is February 26th.
In 2011, A Simple Life won Best Actress Award (Deannie Yip) at the Venice Film Festival. The film was also Hong Kong's official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 84th Academy Awards (2012).
Ann Hui directs this Hong Kong drama starring Andy Lau and Deannie Yip about an elderly housekeeper and the employer who comes to look after her. Ah Tao (Yip) has served movie producer Roger (Lau)'s family for generations. When Ah Tao has a stroke Roger, who is now the only member of his family left in Hong Kong, helps her achieve her wish off leaving her job and finding a place in a nursing home. Roger continues to look out for her and their relationship grows even stronger.
Lau and Yip have played opposite each other many times, perhaps most notably in the 1985 drama "The Unwritten Law", based on the classic "Madame X", where Lau plays an attorney who defends his mother, Yip, against murder charge.
Finally!! I saw this at the Toronto Film Festival in 2011 and have been waiting for a North American bluray release ever since. This is fantastic news. My favourite film of the festival that year.
