Lionsgate and Samsung Become Partners

Posted January 9, 2013 08:18 PM by Webmaster

Lionsgate FilmsLionsgate Films and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced today that they are partnering to provide 3D offerings of popular theatrical titles for the home entertainment market. The announcement was made at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The first films to be converted in 3D, utilizing Samsung's proprietary 3D image processing technology, will be Gamer, Crank, and Bangkok Dangerous, as well as the horror thriller hit The Descent.

There were three times as many 3D enabled Blu-ray releases in 2012 than in 2011, while 3D television households nearly doubled from 3.5 million in 2011 to an estimated 6.4 million in 2012.

These are popular titles?
Really I mean Crank yeah has a cult sort of semi popular following but beyond that lol. well if they are priced right then I will see about it.
Its lionsgate they have been great with their 3D pricing lately especially with that Spy Kids 3D/SHarkboy lava Girl 3D double feature so pretty good chance these will be reasonablt priced.

I absolutely loved The Descent and I respect LionsGate (always have), but I don't see myself ever being interested in 3D titles, especially when they're being converted years later.

AWESOME. I say bring on the 3D! I love it, so the more, the better. I also hope Disney converts all their classics and doesn't draw the line circa 1988 and The Little Mermaid.

Gamer might be fun in 3D, but yeah I'm surprised by this too. Was just wondering for those who have TV's or Projectors that do 2D to 3D, how is that technology?

The Descent could be interesting in 3D... given the caves and what not.

Happy to re-visit the scariness of THE DESCENT in 3D.

Oooooh The Descent is an interesting choice! Crank is also pretty novel as well haha. I hope their conversion technology works better that JVC's for iRobot

iRobot sucked, if these are same "quick" conversions this will not be good at all :/

Why don't you just select the upconvert 2D to 3D option on your Blu-ray player and watch as many titles as you want without having to rebuy everything? Maybe Samsung can improve that technology.
