French studio EuropaCorp has revealed that it is planning to bring to Blu-ray director Jean-Pierre Améris's L'Homme qui rit a.k.a The Man Who Laughs (2012), starring Gérard Depardieu, Marc-André Grondin and Emmanuelle Seigner. The preliminary release date set by the studio is May 29th.
Based on Victor Hugo's popular novel, The Man Who Laughs had its world premiere at last year's edition of the Venice Film Festival.
Official synopsis: In the middle of a harsh winter, Ursus, a colorful carnival boss, rescues two orphans lost in a storm: Gwynplaine, a young boy whose face is deformed by a scar that makes him look as though he's constantly laughing, and Déa, a blind girl. A few years later, they travel throughout the land, performing a show in which Gwynplaine is the star. People come from everywhere to see The Man Who Laughs - he makes people laugh and enthralls the crowd. As time goes by, success opens important doors to the young man, he becomes famous and rich, and eventually abandons the only two people in the world who love him for what he is.
It's funny to see that the silent movie inspired the Joker character for the 1940 comic of Batman, and that the Dark Knight movies inspired the new look for the remake!
