Shout Factory branch Scream Factory has announced and detailed the Collector's Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack release of director Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce, starring Steve Railsback, Peter Firth, Mathilda May, Frank Finlay and Patrick Stewart. The sci-fi horror cult classic arrives on Blu-ray on April 30, 2013, and features both the film's original theatrical version and longer international cut in high definition.
With special effects by Academy Award-winner John Dykstra (1977 Best Visual Effects, Star Wars) and a script by Dan O'Bannon and Don Jakoby, Lifeforce follows a mission to investigate Halley's Comet, where an even stranger phenomenon is discovered: an alien spacecraft. Following a deadly confrontation, the aliens arrive on Earth, where their seductive leader begins a terrifying campaign to drain the lifeforce of everyone she encounters. Her victims, in turn, continue the cycle, and soon the entire planet is in mortal danger. When the mission's sole survivor (Railsback) sets out to destroy her, he comes face to face with the most charming - and horrifying – being he's ever known. Will he be able to destroy the lovely vampiress... or will he become yet another victim of her fatal allure?
The Blu-ray edition of Lifeforce boasts a 1080p video transfer, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track and a variety of supplements, new and old:
Theatrical and International Versions (the BD features both cuts, the DVD only includes the international)
New Audio Commentary with Director Tobe Hooper
New Cast & Crew Retrospective with Railsback, Hooper and others
I heard from someone that the Blu-ray would not have the international cut on it. But this posting says it will. I hope so--it's a huge deal to have this on Blu-ray but the international cut is better!
There's nothing quite like seeing naked space vampires lay waste to the subway station you pass on the way to work every morning... for that reason alone I think I will have to pick this up!
I remember watching this one the big screen back in the 80s... I spilt my popcorn in my lap several times during the movie. I remember drooling the rest of the day too...
Pre-ordered my copy. This is one of my all-time favorites.
Shout / Scream Factory, you guys are the best. I can't tell you how nice it is to have these older films receiving top-drawer treatment like "Death Valley", "Terror Train", "They Live", etc. Really looking forward to this!
@Daytripper - it *is* a poster... if you order directly from Shout Factory:

Ahhh Lifeforce, I remember having a half day at high school, came home put on the remainder of Lifeforce from my previous watch, bought myself lunch and promptly watched as patrick stewarts eyes started to leak....One of the most impressive pies I have ever bought..I powered through to the end though! Good movie
The film that World war Z can only dream of being and which holds the anwer to all of life's questions. And remember - when confronted by a naked space vampire, under no circumstances offer her a cup of tea and a nice biscuit.
Afraid I agree about the cover - the artist seems to have replaced the irreplaceable Mathilda May with Claire Forlani for some reason. But in the extended international version, you DO get to see Stewart and Railsback kiss - that was one of the cuts for the US version.
Still have the original DVD version...hard to believe it was 1977. Great sci-fi flick though I wouldn't call it horror in a scarry sense. The BD version would be a killer.
This 1985 Cannon Films shocker was outragous when I saw it in 70mm. This new Blu-ray I'm sure will put to shame the letterboxed DVD versions that MGM put out many years ago. A must buy!
Too bad they couldn't find Patrick Stewart discuss this flick (he seems to think the title is "Space Vampires" or something similar - international title?) on The Tonight Show years back. It was a great interview.
Mathilda May is superb. Only a vintage Ingrid Pitt could have been better.
Thanks Scream Factory ... like others, an all-time favorite of mine and a definite purchase. I do have to agree that my first reaction on seeing the cover was that it's not a very good likeness of Mathilda May. But not a bad cover overall. You'd think maybe they would include Patrick Stewart's picture on the front to appeal to younger twentysomething viewers like my son who are TNG fans but have likely never heard of this movie.
For the last 3 years I have every so often checked to see if Lifeforce was available on blu-ray. Today a strange force told me to check and I was overjoyed to see it finally available. Huge fun, outrageous performances, very funny (unintentionally) too! Full frontal naked vampire girl, space ships, special effects, zombies, super destructive space vampires, London burning and a fantastic score... One of my all time favorite films. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BE BORED BY THIS MOVIE!
