Sony Announces The Devil's Own

Posted February 25, 2008 08:30 AM by Josh Dreuth

Sony Pictures Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will release the Harrison Ford film 'The Devil's Own' for Blu-ray on May 6th. Video will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p AVC, and be accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. No extras have been announced at this time, but expect all the extras from the previous DVD release to be ported to the Blu-ray.

Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt star in this harrowing thriller about an IRA gunman who draws an American family into the crossfire of terrorism. Frankie McGuire (Pitt) is one of the IRA's deadliest assassins. But when he is sent to the U.S. to buy weapons, Frankie is housed with the family of Tom O'Meara (Ford), a New York cop who knows nothing about Frankie's real identity. Their surprising friendship, and Tom's growing suspicions, forces Frankie to choose between the promise of peace or a lifetime of murder.

Dear God, not this awful, insulting piece of trash. This is one of the very worst movies ever to deal with the Troubles. Taken as a thriller, it's mediocre at best, but it scores extra minus points for having a complete lack of understanding or sensitivity to the issues it tackles. It is rife with political and historical inaccuracy. To draw an analogy that US viewers might understand, imagine a movie that featured an Al Qaeda terrorist portrayed as a righteous freedom fighter who only wants those weapons to liberate his people from those evil imperialist Americans. That would be about as insulting as The Devil's Own is to Irish viewers.

This movie was so bad even Ford and Pitt have disowned it. Of all the movies begging for a Blu-Ray release they pick this one? It beggars belief.

Woo Hoo! Another stinker from Sony. Here's hoping it sells less than Close Encounters Of The Third Kind so Sony will get the hint. Let's forget about these kind of releases and get on with releasing blockbuster titles. You know?...The ones that will actually make money.

Certainly woundn't be one I'd have picked as being released so early by Sony. It seems like they are releasign the first titles they put out on dvd when it hit mainstream with this, first knight, legends of the fall and the like so by 2014 or so we may get to the more recent catelog titles.

Im Irish and I thought the story was a load of rubbish even for Hollywood standards when dealing with the IRA but the film is just bad and is certainly not one of Ford or Pitts better efforts.

That said its no where near as bad as that other IRA effort Blown Away with Tommy Lee Jones and Jeff Bridges which should never shown in public again.

lol Sounds like this movie caused lots of hard feelings. I hadn't ever seen it. Before I buy it I guess I'll try renting it (which I almost never do anymore :P)...Harrison Ford is one of my favorite actors...Guess there might be a reason I didn't know of it before. :P
