The newly restored version of Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate is heading to French cinemas thanks to local distributors Carlotta Films. Fans of Cimino's controversial epic film will be able to see it starting February 27th.
Large-scale Western from Michael Cimino, following on from the success of The Deer Hunter. In Wyoming in the 1890s, American cattlemen clash with European immigrants. Harvard graduate James Averill (Kristofferson) is appointed marshal to keep the peace, but clashes with gunfighter Nathan D. Champion (Walken). The film, originally budgeted at $7.5 million, actually cost over $44 million, and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Art Direction.
Note: Heaven's Gate is already out on Blu-ray in the United States courtesy of Criterion. Read our review here.
I saw the Criterion blu ray. Underrated film, gorgeous visuals, epic-scale storytelling, Hollywood no longer makes films like this. Glad to see it received the recognition it deserved. Shame Cimino retired from filmmaking.
