Independent British distributors Metrodome Video have sent us the official quad poster and trailer for director Franck Khalfoun's Maniac (2012), starring Elijah Wood, America Olivo, Nora Arnezeder, and Sammi Rotibi. The film, which is a remake of William Lustig's 1980 cult slasher, is set to open in local cinemas on March 15th.
To stay that Frank (Wood) is a troubled young man would be an understatement - as the ever-growing number of young women he has murdered since the death of his mother (Olivo), with whom he enjoyed an unhealthily close relationship, demonstrates only too well. Frank runs a mannequin store and likes to apply the scalps of his victims to the models in his spare time. However, when beautiful young artist Anna (Arnezeder) wanders into the store and talks about making use of its resources for an exhibition she is planning, she presents Frank with a troubling quandary. Anna appears to offer the possibility of a human relationship that will the void created by his mother's death, but she also excites his desire to kill and possess. Will Frank be able to overcome his homicidal urges?
An hommage to Kubrick's Killer's Kiss (and even A Clockwork Orange?) with the mannequins, all lit in neo-1980's neon blue and pink worthy of Drive? I like it.
Trailer reminds me of the Roger Corman classic A Bucket of Blood. Sure is it with far more gore and Special Effects. However, the basic theme is there. Looser guy kills to make art in the form of statues.
I normally despise grammar Nazis. However, the constant misspelling of "loser" is driving me crazy! "Looser" is an adjective (that prostitute sure was looser than my wife); "loser" is a noun (I sure am a loser for going to the trouble of describing the difference between the two).
Agreed, that poster looks sweet. I'd love to hang it up in my room.
Of course, I haven't even seen the film yet, but it's one of my most anticipated. Absolutley love the original. Joe Spinell's performance was amazing.
