Netflix Beefs Up Blu-ray Offerings

Posted February 28, 2008 08:16 AM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray MoviesIn a statement given by the online movie rental company increasing projected subscribers, Netflix mentioned that they will increase their Blu-ray catalog by as many as 1,500 titles. Currently, Netflix maintains about 400 Blu-ray titles in their rental database. The plus-up in available titles is due to increased demand for high definition movies and the culmination of the format war.

There also continues to be discussion about possibly raising their fees due to the excess cost of the media. When asked if Netflix would raise their fees for Blu-ray customers, CFO for Netflix Barry McCarthy commented, "It seems apparent that content will cost us more. Whether we raise prices will be entirely a function of churn, subscriber acquisition costs and gross margins."

And these 1500 new titles are going to come from where exactly?

There's no way anywhere near that many titles are getting released this year.

I thought this happened. I noticed late last week. All in one fell swoop that all but 3 of my 12 "Very
Long Wait" Blu-ray Disc had been moved to "Short Wait", and all 15 remaining in wait line list are
now in
"Available Now" status.
I guess the spent the money they would have spend on HD DVD buying more Blu-ray Disc.
The benefits of one video format.

THANK GOD... maybe now the top 30 movies in my queue will become available... Their supply for Blu users has been terrible.

My queue still has long wait for them all right now

Too bad I fired them over a year ago for "thorttling".

If they knock that crap off I might consider returning one day.

I have never tried a rental service like this, and I am not sure I am willing to pay a monthly fee to
join, but now that they have boosted their Blu-ray catalog I might consider it.

Translation: "Absolutely! And you thought Blockbuster was expensive..."

So much for $15 a month. Nice to have the selection though, instead of waiting for 2 months for a title to be available.

@punkguy03

If your roommates use it, just get them to start adding Blu-rays to their lists.

Nice! Perhaps I will consider rejoining. I got tired of seeing long wait times and them sending me
titles at the bottom of my list over the new releases.

Also to those wondering where the 1400 new titles are coming from, they are just ordering
duplicates of what they currently stock. Not new titles. As this will shorten wait times for
subscribers.

All the Blu-ray Discs in my Netflix queue are available now, and it happened shortly after the announcement to support BD only. I've never experienced this throttling phenomenon, although I did take advantage of a free month at the unlimited 4-out plan. I've been a member since May 2001 and Netflix has always been awesome. I look forward to the enhanced Blu-ray support.

Do you really think this "media" costs more than SD? Maybe all the BOGOs spoiled me but I don't think I'm paying any more for BD than I did for SD. ebay helps, too!

Erm, what's "throttling"?

"Throttling" and the Chavez lawsuit
Netflix's allocation policy—referred to by many as "throttling"—gives priority shipping and selection to customers who rent fewer discs per month. Higher volume renters may see some of their shipments delayed, sent across country, or sent out of order.[28] Netflix currently claims that "the large majority of our subscribers are able to receive their movies in about one business day following our shipment of the requested movie from their local distribution center."[29] However, not all shipments come from the subscriber's local distribution center. Shipments from distant centers are often delayed, as well.

I would be willing to pay more for expanded Blu-Ray, but no more of this very long wait BS! If Netflix is going to raise prices, they better be prepared to buy more copies of certain titles

Well the two I want to see most, Gone Baby Gone and Michael Clayton are still long wait. So no help for me yet. So Netflix still sucks right now IMO.

I don't get why people think it is unfair to pay more for renting hidef than for dvd. You pay more for those movies in the store (unless you wait for bogo's etc) - and get better quality. It should be worth more money. Besides it will still always be cheaper than buying.

I agree wait-times should be very short though..

Personally, I prefer to actually own the movies (so it costs me a lot more than it does for renters anyway).

Netflix doesn't pay retail for the movies, so I don't know their cost. However, given that Amazon can do BOGOF with free shipping, and can still make money out of the deal, I doubt that the actual cost of BD is higher than $10 per movie.

Is good news, since I had Netflix before, more than half and most of movie I wanted for blu-ray is always in the long waiting list, nearly all new movie are the longest waiting list. The news of Netflix gonna purchased more blu-ray is good news for faster waiting list for blu-ray. I think it help netflix to sell those HD DVD an use that $ to buy blu-ray ;P But anyway blockbuster has raise their price by like crazy 20% start of this year.

Please read the posts.. it's not 1500 New titles... they meant 1500 more discs.. not individual movies.. I see 2 or 3 posts talking about that after it was clarified.
