New York-based distributor A24 has released the first trailer for Sofia Coppola's latest project, The Bling Ring (2013), starring Emma Watson, Leslie Mann and Taissa Farmiga. The film is set to be released in theaters across the United States on June 14th.
Coppola also wrote the script for the film, which is based on a Vanity Fair article by Nancy Jo Sales ("The Suspects Wore Louboutins").
Film shows a group of teenagers obsessed with fashion and fame who burglarized the homes of celebrities in Los Angeles. Tracking their targets' whereabouts online, the teens would break-in and steal designer clothes and possessions. Reflecting on the naiveté of youth, amplified by today's culture of celebrity and luxury brand obsession, the members of the Bling Ring introduce us to temptations that nearly any teenager would find hard to resist. What starts out as youthful fun spins out of control and reveals a sobering view of our modern culture.
Fascinating. Coppola is one of my favorite filmmakers and this one really looks like she’s pushing for commercial appeal, at least more-so than ever before: this one doesn’t look nearly as low-key and tranquil as her previous films. It’s more energized, and is that an actual action scene I saw there? In a Sofia Coppola film?
The teaser is nothing special but I'm glad to finally get a glimpse of it. I was already excited for the film and that hasn't changed. I hope if Spring Breakers is a huge flop that doesn't deter A24 from expanding this film semi-wide. Would love to see it theatrically. I think this would have been a better gamble as a wide release than Spring Breakers.
