Universal Studios has released a trailer for director James DeMonaco's latest project The Purge (2013), starring Lena Headey (Dredd), Ethan Hawke (Before Sunset), and Edwin Hodge (TV's Cougar Town). The film is set to open in theaters across the United States on May 31.
The Purge is produced by Michael Bay, Jason Blum, Andrew Form, Bradley Fuller, and Sebastien Lemercier.
Official synopsis: If on one night every year, you could commit any crime without facing consequences, what would you do? In The Purge, a speculative thriller that follows one family over the course of a single night, four people will be tested to see how far they will go to protect themselves when the vicious outside world breaks into their home. In an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity—including murder—becomes legal. The police can't be called. Hospitals suspend help. It's one night when the citizenry regulates itself without thought of punishment. On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become when a stranger comes knocking.
Concept seems very out there, different but far from a realistic approach. Might be a worthy thriller though, as long as you can get by the thought of making an annual 12 hour period for criminals to do as they please to lower the crime rate..(not seeing how that works?)
Stupid and NOT original. It was done to a degree in an original STAR TREK episode where they go to a planet were every goes nuts for a certain amount of time to let out steam - basically the same damn thing. CAN'T ANYONE COME UP WITH AN ORIGINAL IDEA ANYMORE!!!!
This movie looks pretty creepy....definitely gives me a Strangers feel. I think they should have chose a better release date tho Summer is normally reserved for the bigger blockbusters in my opinion. I think it may do better being released in August or September.
