Samsung Cancels BD-UP5500

Samsung has announced that they have canceled plans to introduce their second generation hybrid Blu-ray and HD DVD player, the Samsung BD-UP5500, due to Blu-ray winning the format war. Their first hybrid player, the Samsung BD-UP5000, was riddled with compatibility issues, and the time line to replace the player was escalated. With the successor now canceled, it appears Samsung will slowly leave the dual format player market.

dealing with 2 formats in 1 player I'm sure had it's difficulties, I just hope they do it right now they are looking doing Blu-ray only... any chance we'll see them announce a profile 2.0 player soon? |

Finally they are getting their heads out of their @$$ & focus solely on Blu-Ray. Samsung makes great TV's but have never made great DVD/BD/HD-DVD players. I hope the lawsuit will wake them up and get their act together. |

Samsung was blu-ray player in the beginning til they started to act like Paramount by making an dual format player cause the first blu-ray player was so bad....
Oh well, i guess they need to work with Sony to improve their next new blu-ray player |

the dual format players were a bad idea anyways. I can't believe some people were hailing them as the solution to the format war. They wanted a stalemate until dual format players are priced below $150. Wonder how long that would have taken.
Glad they lost money on it. They should have just concentrated on supporting blu-ray. |

They could have used their head and seen that Blu-ray was winning in the first place. Saved themselves some cash on R&D. |

Hm, announcing the cancellation of dual players one month after the death of HD...
That's rather a risky move, isn't it? |

Theres no point in doing it now really as blu is victorious, if both formats would have been around for a foreseable future then ok but they need to focus on makeing blu ray players now that work 100%and let hd die a v fast death
But i wont be buying 1 as im deffo not a fan of samsung |

LG will be the only maker to cater to the niche group of dual format owners now. Not surprised, it
looks like this was something that was bound to happen. Now fix your existing Blu-ray players! |
