British distributors Second Sight Films have revealed that they are preparing a Blu-ray release of director Walter Hill's Streets of Fire (1984), starring Michael Paré, Diane Lane, Willem Dafoe, and Rick Moranis. However, the distributors are yet to reveal a preliminary resale date.
An itinerant soldier (Michael Pare) returns home to find his ex-girlfriend, now a renowned rock singer (Diane Lane), has been kidnapped by a vicious gang. He and a female sidekick (Amy Madigan) go to her rescue.
Some extras would be nice. When the film was originally released on the big screen, Universal retailed a behind the scenes video with music videos on VHS at a then-bargain price to promote it, but it never turned up on the subsequent VHS or DVD editions.
Walter Hill had an untouchable series of tough-guy/bad-ass movies... until this debacle. Admittedly a guilty pleasure but a bloody shame as well. And the soundtrack (except for the Blasters and Ry Cooder) suuuuuuuuuuucks so egregiously! Eighties fairy puke bullshit! Ooh, but Diane Lane is sofa-king HOT. Willem Dafoe, Lee Ving and Rick Moranis emerge untarnished.
I saw the title 'Streets of Fire' on Blu-ray.com news updates and went, "Yes! Finally!". And then I saw the little UK flag in the corner and just sunk in my chair with equal disappointment. Here's hoping it won't be region locked, or, at the very least, Universal will soon follow with a US release.
This was an odd film when I first ran across it on late night TV way back not even sure when; and still somewhat odd after seeing it again on HD-DVD. But yup, it is pretty decent, enjoyed seeing it in HD. A non-obsolete format copy with lossless audio would be a real treat.
