The German branch of StudioCanal has revealed that it plans to bring to Blu-ray director Sam Peckinpah's Convoy (1978), starring Kris Kristofferson, Ali MacGraw, and Ernest Borgnine. The preliminary release date set by the studio is August 15th.
Sam Peckinpah's classic road-movie based around the hit song by C.W. McCall. Long-distance trucker Rubber Duck (Kristofferson) is on the run from corrupt sheriff Lyle Wallace (Borgnine). He makes a call on his CB radio asking for assistance from other truckers, many of whom have also fallen foul of Wallace in the past. What follows is a massive truckers' convoy, plenty of CB banter, and a whole lot of smashed-up police cars.
I'm actually stoked about this one--the previous DVD was a stretched-out, washed-out train wreck.
I'm also surprised that it's getting its own release instead of being part of a 4-pack--maybe a collection of song-based comedies?
I LOVED this movie as a kid! Kris Kristofferson was badass. It doesn't hold up as well today, but it's a movie I'd love to have on blu-ray. Sadly, this is a German release. Thanks for crushing my hopes.
Nice, all my favorite movies as a kid are all coming out this year. First it was Runaway Train, then Silver Streak, now Convoy! I have the Aussie dvd (because its uncut) and watched it recently. Yes, it has its flaws, but I think it does hold up and is still a great watch. However, since this is Studio Canal, I'm afraid this may be the cut version. In the cut version, the 3 minute scene of the reporter talking to all the truckers is deleted.
Saw this on MGM-HD not long ago and that looked beautiful, so the blu should as well. Unfortunately the movie itself did not hold up well for me. I loved this as a kid (and hadn't seen since being one, or ever saw it widescreen), and never realized they filmed the song! It just seemed silly to me at this age, although it wasn't lacking old-school charm in many parts.
