Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have selected Norwegian filmmakers Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg to direct Pirates of the Caribbean 5. The film is set to open in theaters around the world on July10, 2015.
Ronning and Sandberg recently directed Kon-Tiki, which was selected to represent Norway in the Foreign Language Film Category of last year's Academy Awards. The film is Norway's most expensive production ever.
Johnny Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow. However, at this point it is unclear whether Geoffrey Rush and Keira Knightley will be back for the fifth installment in the blockbuster series.
Hoped they'd eventually finish what 4 started. Part 4 wasn't half bad, assuming it was just the first part of a bigger trilogy. But, the way they just dropped it after the last one, makes you wonder if they really didn't have anything else planned, even though Depp was supposedly commited to 3 more films.
Actually, I'd much prefer to see a limited N. American engagement of the aforementioned 'Kon-Tiki', which recently opened in Europe ... and eventually, the domestic blu-ray of same; altho there appears to be a French bd available already.
@ambientcafe: Kon Tiki has been released in N. America - it's playing at five theatres in the New York metropolitan area, including the Paris Theatre, right by the Fifth Avenue entrance to Central Park. I suspect it's released elsewhere as well.
As for POTC, while I didn't see #4, I'd be interested in seeing #5 directed by these guys. Very interesting choice, although I don't know that I'd trust these guys with a $200 million movie with big name actors intended for the mass market. What do you want to bet Depp's character winds up on a raft.
@kevin87: Rush and Knightley would be back because it's a really big payday. I can't say I know what it is, but I bet it's at least $5 million and it's that little because they're not the primary stars. (Depp supposedly got $35 million for "On Stranger Tides" and he's supposedly worth $350 million.) Very hard to turn down. Knightley gets much more for this than she does when she's part of those period movies or modern romantic ensemble movies. According to the site therichest.org, Rush is worth $40 million and Knightley is worth $48 million. Rush didn't make that kind of money doing "The King's Speech" or "Shine".
Kon Tiki opened in the US on April 26th but only at limited screens, is currently upto 60 odd.
Here in the UK we don't even get our first festival screening until mid June, with no date on a wider release from the distributor Arrow.
There will probably be a US released BD before the UK gets it in theatres at this rate.
Interesting directorial choice; I really like it. Does anyone else think On Stranger Tides just didn't feel right without Pintel and Rigetti? Totally underrated characters. It can't cost more than a few bucks to hire these guys. As long as they come back for 5, we'll be on track to "righting the ship".
Four was terrible! And the only people I want to see back are Sparrow, Gibbs, the 2 pirate duo whatever their names are and what-his-face with the hat and that's it... no P. Cruz, no love story with two losers... just give me pirates and swashbuckling with some noname actors that can actually act and are not famous. Give some people a job already!
4 felt wrong everywhere. It looked wrong, it sounded wrong. it was just wrong. it was a little better toward the end i think, but have not watching since it came out and don't really consider it to be part of the franchise. I hope only the original actors come back.
