Criterion Getting Ready to Release David Lynch's Mulholland Drive
Posted June 20, 2013 01:16 AM by Webmaster
The Criterion Collection has not yet officially announced that it will release David Lynch's Mulholland Drive, but after months of speculation it appears that the boutique label is indeed getting ready to surprise fans of the acclaimed American director and his work with what will surely be one of the year's most talked-about Blu-ray releases. Earlier today, The Criterion Collection published the image (see below) included with this article at Tumblr.
In 2001, Mulholland Drive won Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Currently, the film is available on Blu-ray via the StudioCanal Collection in different European countries. However, in North America it is sold only on DVD.
I! HAD! THE TIME OF MY LI-I-IIFE! And I owe it all to yoOoOouUu Criterion Collection.
After all my whining like a little b**** about how boring the announcements have been getting from Criterion, I've finally been rewarded! I regret nothing
I can't even begin to describe how happy I am about this. This might be my favorite Lynch film, and to hear that it's getting a LONG overdue US blu release (from Criterion no less!) makes me so excited. This is BIG news.
Criterion is getting ready to release a number of Lynch's works. They already have "Eraserhead" up on HuluPlus channel under the Criterion Studio, plus they recently added "The Short Films of David Lynch" on HuluPlus under the Criterion channel. Now, with "Mulholland Drive", I can only assume that a Lynch BOX SET must be coming. I believe a David Cronenberg set is coming soon as well, as they seem to now hold the rights to (at least) "Shivers", "The Brood", and "Scanners".
How totally awesome. Of the most respected American directors, David Lynch is perhaps the least represented on Blu-ray (in the States). So I'm extremely excited to see any of his films receive the Criterion treatment, but especially one of his masterpieces.
I also own the UK StudioCanal region B disc ... it'll be interesting to see how it compares to the Criterion transfer. Blu-ray.com gave the UK disc 4/5 on PQ, and 5/5 on AQ back in 2010. As Mulholland Drive is my favorite Lynch film, I'll glady double-dip if the improvements warrant it
Am I dreaming? If this is a dream, it is one of David Lynch's cinematic dreams. And his films are all dreams. An announcement like this might just compel me to buy an expensive front projector to watch this film in high definition! I hope that Mulholland Drive is just the beginning of Lynch in the Criterion Collection. Would love to see Lost Highway come to Criterion BD too!
As Martin Scorcese's Jesus said in The Last Temptation of Christ, "IT HAS BEEN accomplished"!
My least favorite Lynch film. Never quite got the flurry of excitement over it. This, along with "The Game", are just a couple of Criterion titles that I won't need to own....now if they were releasing "The Straight Story" or "Wild at Heart", we'd have a must own! However, I am happy for those who like the film are getting a release in the U.S.
Not trying to rain on this parade because I hope it's true, but this photo was tweeted by Criterion with this line, not sure if that really means they are releasing it: “Regarding MULHOLLAND DRIVE...” A special request from David Lynch, friend to projectionists:
Blu-ray.com must have some inside information, because otherwise this is a BIG assumption based on a pic that has been heavily reblogged around Tumblr for years. Does CC's Facebook pic of Alex last week mean that A Clockwork Orange is coming, too? Nooooo. Still, I am hopeful this is true!
I'm also hopeful we'll see a whole complement of Lynch films, possibly even a Twin Peaks box (they did post a pic of a table full of donuts a few years back...:) ), despite the fact that just last week I ordered 3 Lynch Blu-rays from Europe. :/
Great news. A Lynch box set would be amazing, but I think they know they'll stand to make more money off these if they release Lynch's films individually (Mulholland Dr, Eraserhead, and whatever else they can manage to snag). Would love to see The Elephant Man and Lost Highway added to the list of forthcoming Criterion releases.
There is definitely a lot of assuming going on. It should be pointed out that Criterion didn't even post the image, they reblogged someone else's post. They post this kind of stuff all the time on their various social media accounts, but it doesn't mean they are releasing it.
Of course, I think we would all love it if they did release it, but we shouldn't be getting our hopes up.
Yea, now that I think about it, Criterion does post stuff about other movies that don't get a Criterion release, and they usually make hints, teases, clever pictures, etc., when suggesting an upcoming release...this seems way too easy for them.
So happy about this! Was wondering if I should have gone for the StudioCanal disc. If we just ended up with a cheap Universal edition, I'd have wished I'd gone for the StudioCanal. At least with Criterion, we should get something equally nice as far as special features and overall treatment go.
While I want Mulholland Dr on blu more than anything, i'll remind everyone the last time Lynch was working with CC to do his films a decade ago, someone posted rumors they were doing it. Lynch thought Criterion leaked it and pulled the plug on the deal. Whoever is leaking this news had better pray that doesn't happen.
Hopefully it'll differentiate from the Region B release, since I was always waiting for Criterion to release this, anyhow I can't wait to see this as Lynch requests it. Both Mullholland Drive and Eraserhead will be very welcome additions to the Criterion label.
