Shout Factory Acquires Paul Reubens' TV Series Pee-wee’s Playhouse

Independent distributors Shout Factory announced today that they are bringing Paul Reubens' TV series Pee-wee's Playhouse to the home entertainment marketplace. Shout Factory recently secured extensive distribution rights to all 45 episodes of Pee-wee's Playhouse and Pee-wee's Christmas Special, including worldwide home entertainment, select digital rights and broadcast for cross-platform releases. The announcement was made by Shout Factory's founders Richard Foos, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos.
The distributors also announced that they are working on a full-range of bonus features for Pee-wee's Playhouse: The Complete Series, an upcoming milti-disc Blu-ray box set. The TV show has also been re-mastered from original 35mm film elements.
Shout Factory plans an aggressive rollout of this definitive complete series Blu-ray collection and individual seasons in 2014.
I loved Pee-wee's Playhouse as a kid, but when I bought the DVD sets, I ended up selling them after watching a couple episodes because the nostalgia factor couldn't outweigh the fact that the show is for kids.
Wow... did not see that coming! Re-masters of TV shows into HD that were originally only mastered in SD always impress me, such as Seinfeld, Star Trek: TNG, etc. It's one thing to take a show that was mastered on film and then make HD transfers out of them (I've seen them do this with Hogan's Heroes, Charlie's Angels, etc), but this always comes across as a more impressive task. I haven't actually watched this show in YEARS, so this might be the best way to get reacquainted!
i truly loved this show when i was a kid but i'd be dubious about my ability to enjoy it as an adult... was there much in the way of humor that may have gone over my head as a child? i know Pee Wee's early stand-up material was not so kid-friendly...
Best day ever! This is absolutely a show that I will gladly re-buy for a Blu-ray upgrade plus terrific special features. Maybe I should just automatically deposit my paychecks to Shout Factory, it would be much easier.
It's good for Pee Wee to come to blu-ray, but Pee Wee's Playhouse is not something I think I'll get on BD. It was a good show, but as an adult I don't seem to enjoy it as much as I did (I bore quickly with it now). The movies I can still tolerate; so that means we need Big Top Pee Wee .
I watched the show off and on when it first aired as I was already an adult because of the camp factor. After seeing Pee Wee On Broadway on one of the pay channels though Id have to pass on this as I don't think I could watch the whole series.
Because people, like myself, that grew up watching it like to re-visit things from their childhood that were important to them.
Because people still produce babies, and babies turn into children, and maybe those parents want to buy this for those children to watch.
Because its a popular property that will make Shout Factory lots of money.
I watched this as an adult when it originally aired with my young son, who loved it. I'm pretty sure I remember one episode where Pee-Wee made a comment/joke using the planet name Uranus, and I remember thinking adults would get it in the "your-anus" interpretation, while young kids obviously wouldn't. I couldn't believe he got away with that one, but maybe I just interpreted it dirty (quite possible).
