Paramount and CBS Home Entertainment are bringing The Honeymooners: Classic 39 Episodes to Blu-ray this fall. The comprehensive collection features all 39 full-length series episodes remastered in high definition. Ralph, Alice, Ed and Trixie make their Blu-ray debut on April 8th.
Synopsis: Ralph Kramden (Jackie Gleason) is a New York bus driver who dreams of a better life. With his eccentric good friend, sewer worker Ed Norton (Art Carney), Ralph constantly tries crackpot schemes to strike it rich. All the while, his exasperated wife, Alice (Audrey Meadows), is always there to bring him down to earth or to pick him up if he beats her to it. For as much as they fight, even dunderhead Ralph knows that she is the greatest and vice versa.
Complete tech specs and special features have yet to be detailed.
This is SO unexpected yet fantastic news! I never would have imagined this announcement...awesome job CBS and Paramount! I still think some of the lost episodes were funnier, but these are still darn funny. I wish they would now start to do more TV series, I would like to see on Blu-ray: Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Amazing Stories, Bewitched and I would be willing to bet that by the end of the year we get an announcement about I Love Lucy!
Ditto, unexpected. I thought these were shot on low-fi video and would never be upgraded. Glad I managed to put off buying the DVD. Do the Hucklebuck.
Since nitin mentioned Twin Peaks, IS there any lead that this is coming to blu anytime soon? I just ordered the DVD on sale and probably won't even watch it if a blu is coming anytime soon.
Well, this will certainly affect my viewings of this program on New Years on WPIX-TV in NY, but in a good way, since I will be able to enjoy this all year round in my favorite format! I hope this is priced fairly for week 1 of its release.
Oh my god !!!!!! My wish has come true !!!!! Can i believe my eyes !!!!! My favorite growing up on ch 11 at 11pm staying up to watch with my grandfather great memories !!! goodbye dvd set. Hello hd bluray set !!!!!!!!!! GREAT NEWS LOVE IT !!!!!! Thank you, thank you, CBS
Great news indeed! I'm surprised to learn there were only 39 episodes ever produced though. Was the show cancelled after only 1 or 2 seasons, or is the annoucement misleading about this set being complete?
@MoulinBlu- There was only a single season (they produced many more episodes than a typical TV season these days). Jackie Gleason & CBS did not want to continue to do the show on its own. It did continue as a segment of his variety show.
I honestly did expect this to be released on blu one day but didn't actually think it may actually happen... hell, didn't think it'd be this year! Kudos to Paramount for releasing a classic comedy in the newest remastered format!
I'm waiting on audio specs before I pre-order. If they follow in CBS' Twilight Zone footsteps , we'll get 16-bit lossless which is just fine. If it's 192kbit Dolby Digital or they sacrifice video bitrate trying to cram 4+ hours of episodes on a single disc (I'm looking at you, Sat Trek TNG video smear), I'll pick it up used.
Ideally, we'll get 39 episodes spread across 4-5 discs and DTS-HD 1.0 for the shows and the extras. (I find a lot of these 192kb Dolby commentaries almost unintelligible at times versus the 224kb and 320kb.)
If they were smart, they'd put the Dick Van Dyke set for sale around the same time. I'd almost certainly pick them both up at the same time
