Mary Poppins: 50th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray

Posted August 1, 2013 02:11 AM by Webmaster

Walt Disney PicturesWalt Disney Home Entertainment has revealed the 50th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray release of director Robert Stevenson's Mary Poppins, starring Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, Glynis Johns, David Tomlinson, Matthew Garber, Karen Dotrice and Jane Darwell. The live-action Walt Disney classic makes its Blu-ray debut on December 10th.

Synopsis: A magical, musical nanny (Andrews) brings a breath of fresh air into the stuffy Banks household in turn-of-the-century England. Overstuffed with gaiety, this children's fantasy is filled with dance numbers and outrageous songs (among them the seemingly unpronounceable "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"), and its blend of live-action and animation was a marvel in its day.

Mary Poppins also features Andrews' film debut and Darwell's last film appearance, earned thirteen Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture, Best Director and Best (Adapted) Screenplay), and won five Oscars (Best Actress: Julie Andrews, Best Original Score, Best Song: Chim Chim Cher-ee, Best Editing, and Best Special Visual Effects).

Tech specs and special features have yet to be detailed. However, Disney has stated the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack will offer brand new bonus content.

I figured this would be coming soon, since Disney is releasing their new "Saving Mr Banks" in December. Pretty excited about it though. I expect Disney will pull out all the stops with this one, as far as remastering it for high def and lots of new special features.

I'm really looking forward to adding this to my collection. I have been on a musical kick lately and just watched Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music and Dick Van Dyke in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in the last week!

Anyone else ever get an incredible sense of melancholy listening/watching the "feed the birds, tuppence a bag" scene in Mary Poppins? Always got a huge sense of depression in this moment, even as a kid, more than just sadness. Very powerful scene.

Always was a big fan of this movie, hope Disney will do a great transfer here. Tragic ending for the young man Michael Gerber who played young "Michael Banks" in this move. Life is so very short.

Actually the cover looks more like the original poster art than any other video release of this title ever has. It's about time. And the young boy in the film was named Matthew Garber. I've been holding off buying this title, this could be the time. Saving Mr. Banks looks pretty good, and it's only natural it'll spark more interest in Poppins, which really should have a theatrical release of its own one of these days. Maybe it'll get a couple weeks at the El Capitan.

I picked a hell of a time to have a kid. Disney has been emptying my wallet for 4 years straight!

(Although. Had it been 6 years ago I'd have be bought DVDs and would be re-buying BDs)

Damn you Disney!

As with the rest... Day one.

Day whatever it takes to go low. This one never really enraptured me for some reason. Then again I only remember watching it once when I was a kid, and since I remember very little about it, I must not have liked it that much. I'll probably get it anyway, maybe it will hold up better than the other one with bleep Van bleep in it, Chitty Boom Boom or something.
Hurry up and do this Black Hole remake so we can get the original on blu please. 20,000 Leagues is being delayed for the same reason apparently.

Super---!

I do wish they would leave Walt Disney's credit on the packaging though.

More of Walt's classic films needed on Blu-ray:

Swiss Family Robinson
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Pollyanna
The Parent Trap!
Darby O' Gill and the Little People
Treasure Island
Old Yeller
The Three Lives of Thomasina
etc.

Absolutely. "Melancholy" is the perfect word to describe the feeling it invokes in me. I absolutely love it. BTW: I believe that this was Walt Disney's favorite song. I remember hearing that directly from Richard Sherman in the bonus content for a Disney movie (probably bonus content from "Mary Poppins", but I don't remember). A quick google search seems to back this up.

Where are some of you guys getting the idea there's going to be a steelbook version? Considering that Disney has NO affiliation with steelbooks and the earlier "steelbook" company that Disney was using for a brief time (Lion King, Cinderella, Cars 2, Brave) was sued out of existence

"Overstuffed with gaiety" - "outrageous songs" - "seemingly unpronounceable" - who WRITES this stuff?? If Poppins gets a theatrical run at the El Capitan, It would have to be before Frozen opens, I imagine. Mr. Banks is set to debut in limited release 12/13 (which will likely include the El Capitan) before going wide 12/20.

Wow! Totally excited to see this finally coming out. Have waited a long time to hear this announcement! I'm hoping that means Disney has taken extra special care with this title. Disney has a great track record so this should look fantastic. Probably my all time favorite Disney film. Would also love to see Bedknobs and Broomsticks get a release, as well as the other live action classics. I have a feeling the folks at Disney have been working on this a long time, the film elements needed an overhaul. The 40th anniversary edition looked great at the time, but I'm sure a lot of work was needed for the animation/live action scenes to make them look right. I was pleasantly surprised that Pete's Dragon came out looking great, wasn't expecting much from that title as it always seems kind of forgotten or overlooked, but it looked fresh and new! By far Disney puts out the best looking blu ray's of anyone...this is their crown jewel so I'm sure they will have it looking wonderful. Can't wait!!! It's a Jolly Holiday with Mary...
