Scream Factory, the horror-thriller offshoot of independent film distributor Shout Factory, will release a Collector's Edition Blu-ray of director Sam Raimi's Darkman (1990), starring Liam Neeson, Frances McDormand, and Colin Friels. The release is set to arrive on the U.S. market this December.
Exact technical specs and supplemental features to be included with this upcoming release are yet to be revealed.
Doctor Peyton Westlake's (Liam Neeson) attempts to clone body parts via computer are disturbed when his laboratory is torched by a gang of thugs, with Westlake left for dead. Horribly disfigured, he uses his equipment to survive, reinventing himself as Darkman. Obssessed with revenging himself on sadistic gang leader Robert G. Durant (Larry Drake), Darkman is torn by his love for former girlfriend Julie (Frances McDormand), and struggles to reconcile the two, warring sides of his personality.
I had the Universal disc, and while it was barebones, it featured a decent HD transfer and was low cost. However, as soon as I heard this was coming, I traded it in knowing that SF will have a stellar new transfer and extras.
Omahajon, it is EXTREMELY unlikely that the transfer will be any different than the one on the Universal disc (which had their trademark DNR meddling). Scream don't usually do new HD masters when one already exists.
Have to see if it's a new transfer or encode at least, 'cause ahh-poo! I JUST bought the old bluray! extras alone would have to be pretty freakin awesome to double dip.
to candystalker, they usually have reversable covers, so the flipside should be decent original art.
I'm in the minority on this (as usual) but I'm more than happy with my Universal BD even if it is barebones. I paid $6 for it so I can't complain. Even though I love Shout Factory, there's no way I'm double dipping for a new transfer of a film I already own when it's already a very satisfying transfer. I can use my money to buy BDs I don't already own instead. Thank you.
I understand why a lot of people are complaining about the cover art. But lets get real for a second guys. These Scream Factory movies (as much as we love them) are schlocky movies that fit this art. The artists working for them are making art in the same vain as Arrow Video across the pond with the same kind of movies. I am sure that if you don't like it the theatrical poster will be on the reverse side of the cover. I am not extremely pleased with this cover, but I have enjoyed many of the others I own (The Burning, Funhouse, They Live, etc.). I will admit this is the poorest looking cover so far.
HUGE FAN! I saw this opening weekend at the theater when I was a kid and loved it so much I even read the novelization. Shout Factory getting a hold of this cult classic is more than a superfan could have hoped for!
Have always been a huge fan of this movie. I can remember conning my grandparents to rent it for me by telling them it was a superhero movie like Superman. I'll admit to preferring the original art (if only because it reminds me of the VHS cover that first made me fall in love with this flick) but the new art is just fine and very artistic & creative. Scream Factory has yet to let me down, between this, Day Of The Dead & The Amityville Trilogy, I'm looking to close out this year of blu ray purchases with some stellar Scream Factory releases in the library.
I don't see this having much of a better transfer than the Uni disc so I'm passing. Down-vote my comment all you want but at the end of the day I am happy with my copy and with all of the double dipping I've experienced (since the days of VHS) I'm content with what I have.
Sure, no one's making me buy this but no one's making you not buy it either.
There will always be something new to obsess over (in this case it's having the most up to date version of movies).
I didn't know Jennifer Gray was in Darkman!! Kidding. They really dolled up the art on Frances MacDormand, it looks nothing like her. As mush as I love her as an actress, I was always curious as to why they didn't cast a more attractive actress as the heroine.
I really hope this transfer is improved (ie: no dnr meddling) over the Universal release which I passed on. I will wait to read reviews about whether this release is an improvement or not before buying.
Never seen this, but I remember seeing the trailer when a couple of friends and I went to see Harlem Nights. We were the minority in the room if you know what I mean. The trailer played and someone shouted "Darkman, what's that supposed to mean!?", or something to that effect. Hilarious and true story.
