Scream Factory Set to Release a Director's Cut of Clive Barker's Nightbreed on Blu-ray

Scream Factory, the horror-thriller offshoot of independent film distributor Shout Factory, and Morgan Creek Productions announced today that they have teamed up to bring to Blu-ray an Extended Director's Cut of director Clive Barker's cult film Nightbreed (1990), starring Craig Sheffer, Anne Bobby, and David Cronenberg. The release is expected to arrive on the market in early 2014.
The official announcement was made earlier today by Shout Factory's founders Richard Foos, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos along with David Robinson, President of Morgan Creek Productions.
For years rumors swirled about substantial missing footage from the film. A fan-driven movement was created (www.OccupyMidian.com) to see the full version of the film restored and re-released, which was not only a more faithful adaptation of Clive Barker's book "Cabal," but is what originally he intended Nightbreed to be.
Clive Barker said, "I had a dream about the tribes of the moon. They would live in a city called Midian and, though they were monsters of every shape and size, they would be the heroes of a movie called Nightbreed. However, when I made the movie, the studio was not comfortable with this inversion of the classic structure. They wanted the monsters to be simple-minded scare machines, while I wanted them to be the dark side of all of us, mysterious and misunderstood. Finally, with this new version of Nightbreed, which contains over forty five minutes of previously unseen material, my original vision has been realized. Come with me to Midian, the city of monsters. The tribes of the moon await us."
"We are excited by this opportunity with Morgan Creek and are huge fans of Clive Barker. His cinematic works and brilliant storytelling continue to captivate fans worldwide," stated Shout Factory's founders in a joint statement. "We look forward to working closely with Clive to bring his original vision to life."
Day 1 buy. No question. Even with its problems, the cut version is something of a unusual masterpiece in my eyes and to see the true version of the film come from the ashes is just wonderful. Bring it on! No matter the price!
I'm waiting to see what the final review on the release is.. I saw it down at Bell Lightbox (Home of the Toronto International Film Festival Group) when Rue-Morgue screened it and the found/additional footage was extremely rough plus there were sound issues as well... It'll be interesting to see what the restoration did for the final product..
The missing footage was only found on video tape as far as I know. Not sure how good an image can be processed from that. Still, this will be a much anticipated release. I think Nightbreed is one of those films that would actually benefit from a remake. Maybe Cronenberg can return behind the camera as the director.
ive seen the cabal cut at two screenings. once last year at a horror con called Monster Mania were stars Craig Sheffer and Anne Bobby were there and both saw it for the first time as well. along with Mark Miller who works with Clives production company and Russell Cherrington who worked on the restoration and hired his own editor jimmy johnson to edit it and let me say this to everyone. true some of the footage is a little rough (russell said at a recent screening i was at it will be cleaned up and remastered for the blu ray to look like the work print version of alien 3) but you will all be blown away at how much better and faithful the movie is. there was about 40 extra minutes of footage added back and after seeing it, you will never want to see the original theatrical version again.
saw they would be showing an extended cut at a horrorhound weekend con a few years back, but I could not make it.... I was so upset that I missed it, and from what I had read, the original " owners " of the film rights, said that it would never see a general mass release because the fanbase was not there. all hope was lost until I just read this awesome news!
The original cut is a huge favorite of mine (and vastly underrated), so I'll definitely be purchasing this. I do hope they include the original cut on this Blu-ray release, but I can't wait to see what the 40 extra minutes does to an already great movie.
I always thought this movie deserved a sequel ... still possible I guess, though kind of late. But PLEASE no remake.
Such amazing news! There's not much movie news nowadays that gets me excited... But this is the best news of the year so far by a mile! I still have the game for the Amiga 500, I have the Nightbreed Chronicles book since its release and off course the old R1 snapper case dvd. I'm such a massive fan of this movie (and Lord of Illusions) and I really can't wait!!!!!! Bring it on!!!
Day 1. However, the Blu Ray will most probably be the existing Theatrical Cut with a DVD only for the extended Cabal Cut. The extended cut will be remastered as best as possible from the VHS elements because both Clive Barker and Morgan Creek have already stated that the original negatives of those additional scenes are permanently lost. I am looking forward to seeing it in any transfer but those expecting a three hour Night Breed in HiDef on Blu Ray are likely to be disappointed. But I'll be more than happy with a Blu Ray of the previously released version.
Danielle; The information I posted was taken from the Occupy Midian group which belongs to the people actually responsible for the Cabal Cut, all of it's cinema screenings and whose great work has led to the current great news about a final release. The information about the missing elements was posted by them, Clive Barker and Morgan Creek within the last month or so. I love how, on these Forums, you get voted down for stating current facts. I'd love to hear that the missing elements HAVE been found but it's just NOT the case at the moment no matter how much I and the other 7,000 people on Occupy Midian would like it to be.
