Universal Studios Home Entertainment is releasing filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock's Topaz (1969), starring Frederick Stafford, Dany Robin, Karin Dor, John Vernon, Claude Jade, Philippe Noiret and Michel Piccoli. Previously available as part of the Alfred Hitchcock: Masterpiece Collection, the single-disc release of the espionage thriller arrives on Blu-ray on November 5th.
Synopsis: Based on the 1967 Leon Uris novel of the same name, Topaz is a tale of global intrigue. John Forsythe plays a CIA agent who teams with a French spy (Stafford) to uncover Soviet activities in Cuba circa 1962. The film features a screenplay written by Samuel A. Taylor, cinematography by Jack Hildyard, and music by Maurice Jarre.
The Blu-ray edition of Topaz features 1080p video, two-channel DTS-HD Master Audio Mono, and several extras:
One of Hitch's weakest, I'm surprised they are wasting time doing an individual release for this when they could just as easily put out the Hitch films individually people actually want (Vertigo, Birds, Rear Window, etc.)
@MeE, What's to comment on about Topaz? It's not a horrible film (I don't think Hitchcock ever did a horrible film, which puts him above pretty much every other director from Ford to Scorsese). But Topaz IS a dull, uninteresting film. I doubt even in Hitchcock master classes in Film Schools Topaz gets no more than 20 minutes discussion
How juvenile..destroy BD's and make your own version of reality fact. Get over it. After directing 50 features, many TV episodes, etc, as well as aging..I can cut the man some slack. But, hey..whatever lets you sleep at night. If Universal hadn't denied him his wish to be more daring (Lew Wasserman, in particular) and let him direct the experimental film "Kaleidescope/Frenzy" instead of this film since the book was a hit..then my wish that history was different would be also be fulfilled.
Akoris, A "Rear Window" single disc is out in UK and I played it on a Region A player. "The Birds" is also available as a single disc, and this site indicates it's region free. A standalone "Vertigo" is coming soon to UK, but for now the site indicates it's Region B.
Got a little excited when I saw this announcement, thinking it's cool that another old movie is being released and then I realized I already have this in the box set! Topaz is an underrated film. It's not brilliant but it's not as bad as people say it is. IMO, it's only because Hitch directed it and it pales in comparison to the likes of North by Northwest that people criticize it so much. If some hack director helmed this and it turned out exactly the way it did, it would be praised as a decent little spy thriller with a few good Hitchcockian touches.
I don't care for the boring spines of the U.K. releases, though. Petty, I know, but that's what I'm looking at on the shelf all the time. Of course I have the box set, too. I double dip for Hitch but that's it!
Early next year we'll get Rear Window, Vertigo, The Birds and Psycho (new release). Universal wants to suck every last dime out of the 2 box sets with these titles first. I can't believe they didn't have a 50th anniversary release of The Birds this year, though. What a wasted opportunity.
@ RICKBOND007 - Total B-S. You totally can sell discs on E-Bay with no case - I do it all the time with the DVD copies of my Blu-Ray / DVD combo packs - I just tell bidders that it's disc only and will come in a jewel case with no artwork. Secondly, how can the box set take up less space now with the three discs gone? The box would be the same size except for three empty sleeves. Finally, you could have kept those three discs along with the whole set and then when the ones you liked were released individually you could have sold the box set, except good luck getting top dollar for it now with three discs missing.
One thing I've learnt after collecting movies on dvd first, then blu-ray is never to hurry over collections. When NBN and Psycho were released on blu-ray I didn't rush like there's no tomorrow to buy something I already had on dvd so there was nothing to stop me when the Essentials set was released on blu-ray and now I'm not moaning about when those three titles will be released individually. It's not like you've NEVER seen those movies in your life. So, if you REALLY can't wait, buy the expensive masterpiece set with all those other films you don't care about. If you're not willing to do that, wait another 6-9 months. What doesn't kill you...
