Only God Forgives Blu-ray

Posted August 26, 2013 01:34 AM by Webmaster

Anchor Bay EntertainmentAnchor Bay Home Entertainment and RADiUS-TWC will bring to Blu-ray acclaimed Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn's crime thriller Only God Forgives (2013), starring Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Vithaya Pansringarm. The release will be available for purchase online and in stores across the United States on October 22.

Lying low in Bangkok ten years after killing a cop, Julian (Gosling) runs a Thai boxing club as a cover for his family's drugs business. But when his brother kills a local prostitute, and is then slain in retribution, Julian's mother Jenna (Scott Thomas) arrives in the city demanding that he track down the killer and mete out revenge. After learning that the man responsible is a retired police officer and lone dispenser of justice known as 'The Angel of Vengeance' (Vithaya Pansringarm), Julian, confident of success, sets out to find him, little realising what he has taken on.

Special Features:
  • Audio Commentary with Director Nicolas Winding Refn
  • Behind the Scenes Featurette
  • Director Interviews
  • The Music of Only God Forgives with Cliff Martinez

A crushing, crushing disappointment after the Pusher films, Bronson, and Drive. A career nadir for all involved, I suspect. I never plan to watch it again.

Despite the negative reviews, I believe Only God Forgives to be the best film of the year. It is inherently Refn, whilst also paying homage to the films of Alejandro Jodorowsky (a director I have only recently become enamored with) and has the greatest scope of any film this year. I wouldn't suggest blind buying it because this is a film that was destined to divide people, but if you are curious you should certainly give it a try. For me it's a day one!

@vader4

Completely agree, I think this film is a masterpiece. Definitely my favorite of the year so far. My favorite Refn film, as well. I went in with an open mind and I wasn't let down one bit. Pre-ordered.

Absolutely loved Drive, one of my favourite movies of all time and was greatly looking forward to this but was hugely, hugely let down. I don't know how you could really even refer to it as a movie, it's a collection of random scenes with little to do with each other featuring the same characters thrown together and labelled as a movie :P

We should all comme... I mean, fight, in the official thread. This way we get a notification when someone posts that this is either the best or worst movie of all time!

I thought the movie was just o.k. upon first viewing. I did enjoy it a lot more the second time I saw it. So I do think (from me) it will just get better with repeat viewings. Beautifully shot though!

Empty, hollow, no feel for any character. I wachted it without any knowledge whatsoever, and was disappointed. A great example of style over (no) substance.

I love how divided people are about this film.
I'm in the love it/masterpiece/best film of the year camp.
I watched it twice (once in the theater, once on-demand) and plan on buying the BD.

Pretty awesome cover art. I will see this for sure. I did hear bad things and that surprised me, but I will rent for sure. It didn't open in theaters where I live.

I'm both shocked and pleased that this movie has a director's commentary track. It definitely NEEDS his scene-specific input for the whole narrative and symbolic process.

@ Henry Dunston

Yes, great to see a commentary with Refn since Drive was lacking one!

Wasn't a huge fan of the movie (kinda liked it, but definitely didn't love it), but I might pick this up just for the commentary.

I rarely saw a film that really divided opinions. My favorite film of the year, so far. Can't wait to see it a second time. Does anyone know if this will be region free? Want to get an extra copy to give to my friend as a birthday present.

Rented it on PSN and I found it on par with Valhalla Rising and not as good as Drive or Bronson. Doubt I'll buy it day one but once it drops in price I'll revisit.

If you liked this and you dig commentaries, this will be worth buying. Refn is always worth listening to. Hopefully someone puts out the Pusher trilogy soon, his commentaries on those are also fantastic.

I really love the cover! Hopefully this gets a Steelbook release! A Digibook would be better, but those are usually saved for blockbuster material.

I quite enjoyed Only God Forgives. (Of course, I also was already quite familiar with director Winding Refn's unusual stories from his previous films and went into the theater with the appropriate expectations.) I'm definitely looking forward to owning this day one.

And, though I won't hold my breath for one, yes, a steelbook would be nice...and probably very stylish like the film it would contain.

I enjoy most of Refn's work, but this didn't resonate with me at all..there were some positives..cinematography was fantastic..and Chang was a bad mutha..but on the whole I was disappointed

LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!

Might be too "sophisticated" in the way it was shot for some, but it was very cool to me.

Day one purchase for sure! And when I get it, it's going to be a permanent resident in my collection
