Anchor Bay Home Entertainment and RADiUS-TWC will bring to Blu-ray acclaimed Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn's crime thriller Only God Forgives (2013), starring Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Vithaya Pansringarm. The release will be available for purchase online and in stores across the United States on October 22.
Lying low in Bangkok ten years after killing a cop, Julian (Gosling) runs a Thai boxing club as a cover for his family's drugs business. But when his brother kills a local prostitute, and is then slain in retribution, Julian's mother Jenna (Scott Thomas) arrives in the city demanding that he track down the killer and mete out revenge. After learning that the man responsible is a retired police officer and lone dispenser of justice known as 'The Angel of Vengeance' (Vithaya Pansringarm), Julian, confident of success, sets out to find him, little realising what he has taken on.

Despite the negative reviews, I believe Only God Forgives to be the best film of the year. It is inherently Refn, whilst also paying homage to the films of Alejandro Jodorowsky (a director I have only recently become enamored with) and has the greatest scope of any film this year. I wouldn't suggest blind buying it because this is a film that was destined to divide people, but if you are curious you should certainly give it a try. For me it's a day one!
Absolutely loved Drive, one of my favourite movies of all time and was greatly looking forward to this but was hugely, hugely let down. I don't know how you could really even refer to it as a movie, it's a collection of random scenes with little to do with each other featuring the same characters thrown together and labelled as a movie :P
I rarely saw a film that really divided opinions. My favorite film of the year, so far. Can't wait to see it a second time. Does anyone know if this will be region free? Want to get an extra copy to give to my friend as a birthday present.
If you liked this and you dig commentaries, this will be worth buying. Refn is always worth listening to. Hopefully someone puts out the Pusher trilogy soon, his commentaries on those are also fantastic.
I quite enjoyed Only God Forgives. (Of course, I also was already quite familiar with director Winding Refn's unusual stories from his previous films and went into the theater with the appropriate expectations.) I'm definitely looking forward to owning this day one.
And, though I won't hold my breath for one, yes, a steelbook would be nice...and probably very stylish — like the film it would contain.
