Warner to Release Be Kind Rewind on Blu-ray (Updated)

Posted April 29, 2008 10:31 AM by Josh Dreuth

Warner Bros. Warner Home Video have revealed that they will bring the Jack Black and Mos Def comedy 'Be Kind Rewind' to Blu-ray on June 17th, a full week before the DVD release. This will be the first time any major studio makes the Blu-ray release available prior to the DVD release, providing an interesting experiment to see how consumers react to only seeing the Blu-ray version on store shelves.

The DVD release was initially scheduled for June 10th, but updated information from the studio now indicates an availability date of June 17th. No word if this was done intentionally, or if production problems caused the delay.

Video will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p VC-1 on a BD-25. No audio specs have been announced at this time. Extras, while not currently announced, will most likely mirror the DVD release.

Update:

We have been informed that the differing release dates listed for the Blu-ray and DVD release in Warner's press site was the result of internal miscommunication at Warner. 'Be Kind Rewind' will be released day-and-date with the DVD and not a week earlier. While the future use of this strategy hasn't been ruled out; many within the industry think it is still too early to risk DVD revenue.

Smart move, could help push Bluray to higher numbers vs DVD sales...
I mean honestly I bought some regular DVDs the other day and as I was watching them, I beat myself up over the fact that they looked crappy... its pretty much Blu from here on out for me, but many people need that little push... maybe this is it... now if the prices can just come down a little

That's awesome...I may have to purchase it just based on this fact (although I really want to see it anyway)

Definitely looking forward to seeing what effect this has.

Good call on their part with the 'DVD vs Blu-Ray' conflict. Now they just need to do it with movies we actually want to see.

What would be more interesting is if it were a much more major title...

Let's hope they try this with The Dark Knight later this year - that would be an interesting experiment.

I was curious when they were going to release blu first. If only they picked a bigger new release title. I still might buy it just to make a statement. Well, as long as it is less than twenty bucks.

I think everybody should go out and buy it just to show Warner that we want Blu-ray over DVD.

It should be interesting to see if it makes a difference but it seems like it should bring blu-ray to the forefront and help sell more copies. So, hopefully it goes well, was intentional and more studios follow suit.

I'm in. This is a good ideal. I also like Fox's idea of releasing the wide screen version of Alvin and The Chipmunks only on the Blu-ray HD format.

This is good, as others have said though it's not exactly a must-see-in-hidef movie.

Great news! This is what studios should do for all their Blu-ray/DVD releases.

Awesome! I was dissapointed when I didn't hear a Blu-Ray was announced, but this is even better!!!

This is a smart move by WB. All studios should start testing this and see if they get a spike in sales. As Doby mentioned above, The Dark Knight would be a prime candidate for a week early release. Discount it for $19.99 and see how well it does.
