For the week that ended on October 13th, Disney again scored the top figures on the Blu-ray media chart its release of The Little Mermaid. The 1989 animated classic revitalized Disney's feature animation department and proved an enduring success for the studio - the film made over $211 million worldwide (almost $400 million, when adjusted for inflation) and continues to attract new fans on the home media platform. One of the fall's most anticipated HD titles, this new Little Mermaid Blu-ray dominated the Blu-ray-only chart and scored an HD market share of 100%.
However, on the overall package media list, The Little Mermaid dropped to number four, where it sold 54% as many units as a new release: Warner Bros' The Hangover: Part III, which took the number one position on that chart. The third (and ostensibly final) picture in the Hangover series, this raunchy comedy was a box-office success (it grossed over $351 million worldwide) despite low critical notices - while the first Hangover drew a solid Metacritic rating of 73%, the best Part III could muster was a 30% Metacritic rating. On the Blu-ray-only chart, The Hangover: Part III sold 82% as many Blu-rays as The Little Mermaid and had an HD market share of 44%.

A big part of the reason for this statistic is that there is no current DVD-only release of The Little Mermaid on the market. All current versions available are some kind of combo pack containing at least the 2D Blu-Ray and DVD (including the version that comes in DVD packaging). So, this means that people who might only want and use the DVD still bought a combo pack due to lack of an alternative. By contrast, there is a DVD only release for Hangover III.
I don't mean to sound anti-Blu-Ray by any means, because I'm far from it and I'm completely in favor of the format (having over 600 Blu-Rays myself). I'm merely pointing out why this doesn't make for an accurate comparison. If The Hangover III was only available in a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack, the Blu-Ray sales would be much higher than they already are.
Too bad The Little Mermaid blu-ray has a pretty noticeable defect, and Disney's pretty much not gonna work on it since one of their representatives wrote that the defect doesn't affect the film experience even though it does.
