However, on the overall package media list, Pacific Rim dropped to number two, where it sold 78% as many units as another new release: Twentieth Century Fox's The Heat, which took the number one position on that chart. A raunchy action-comedy from Bridesmaids collaborators Paul Feig and Melissa McCarthy, The Heat proved one of summer 2013's most enduring box-office favorites, earning over $159 million domestically on top of a $43 million budget. On the Blu-ray-only chart, The Heat sold 70% as many Blu-rays as Pacific Rim and had an HD market share of 33%.
Finally, Disney's The Little Mermaid rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only media list. The 1989 animated classic revitalized Disney's feature animation department and proved an enduring success for the studio - the film made over $211 million worldwide (almost $400 million, when adjusted for inflation) and continues to attract new fans on the home media platform. One of the fall's most anticipated HD titles, this new Little Mermaid Blu-ray had an HD market share of 100% and sold 25% as many discs as Pacific Rim. Regarding the overall package media list, where The Little Mermaid came in at fifth place (behind The Croods and The Hangover: Part III, respectively), the Disney favorite sold 12% as many total units as The Heat.
I would've been MAD if the heat beat pacific rim in the sales. First grown ups 2 beat pacific rim in the box office, then the heat would almost defeat pacific rim in blu ray sales! I'm still happy for pacific rim! One of my favorite films of the year so far!
@bowlingbilly10: Why mad? The Heat did beat Pacific Rim's box office total (and that didn't have 3D to boost tickets), so all things considered, The Heat should logically have come out on top. This only speaks to the strength this sort of spectacle film has on the home video market. I'm happy for it and hope this and the foreign box office shows companies that big, original IP can succeed.
Was surprised that Pacific Rim 3D wasn't on sale the first week it came out at Best Buy, should be on sale like all the other new releases when it first comes out, it would of sold more 3D copies. This was my first time buying a regular priced 3D movie, but didn't care this time, had to get my hands on the 3D version no matter what.
Absolutely incredible disc (Pacific Rim), probably the one I will use for 2D demos and definitely for 3D demos. This is hands down the disc of the year (and maybe in a long time) when it comes to the 3D and also the 2D. The sound is also incredible, my room was shaking! Too bad this didn't do that well at the U.S. boxoffice, it did great business overseas. Had it done better here we might have seen more big monster movies (other than the new Godzilla). Viewing for the 2nd time tonight for friends (and many more showings to come). Looks fantastic on my 159" screen with my JVC 3D projector!
By far, the best 3D live-action blu experience since JC's "Avatar". Definitely 3D Demo material. I like how it have Chinese sub, and DTS-Master 5.1 / 7.1. Best release of the year. Thanks to everyone who are involved..
