Paramount Reveals Initial Blu-ray Titles

Posted April 29, 2008 08:37 PM by Lindsay Mayer

ParamountParamount Home Entertainment have finally unveiled their long-awaited first wave of catalog and recent hit titles that they'll begin releasing May 20th. "We will have a strong slate of titles for Blu-ray release throughout the year, worldwide, and are enthusiastic about expanding the format's offerings for a broad consumer audience while delivering an experience that goes beyond what viewers love about DVD," said Paramount Home Entertainment President Kelley Avery.

Included among this first wave of titles is the Academy Award-winning 'There Will Be Blood,' as well as 'Cloverfield', J.J. Abrams' unusual take on the "creature feature." The first Blu-ray title to be released day-and-date with the DVD release by Paramount will be 'The Spiderwick Chronicles', which will be released June 24th. Below you can find the complete list of Paramount and DreamWorks titles announced for Blu-ray so far:

May 20th:

  • Bee Movie
  • Face/Off
  • Next

    June 3rd:

  • Cloverfield
  • There Will Be Blood

    June 24th:

  • The Spiderwick Chronicles

We will of course keep you posted about any further developments relating to Paramount's and DreamWorks' upcoming Blu-ray release plans, so stay tuned.

Cloverfield on Blu-Ray, huh? Wow, kinda silly since most of the film was made to "look" like low quality video footage. Pretty weak entry into Blu-Ray for Paramount. And the movie was terrible anyway.

Mr. Bay is going to make the Bluray version of Transformers the best he can like he did for the HDDVD version, which will take some time. I rater they take time to do a good job, then have a quick thrown together release or worse a port.

About time that they release BR again sheesh. Nothing exciting in this first batch but at least it's nice to know that they are back now with new products. Ironically, my area always had the older titles available. Some stores stocked up on them but never really managed to sell much of them (why would you carry 50 copies of Aeon Flux?). Let's hope a few franchise titles come sooner than later...

Finally! I cannot wait for Cloverfield and There Will Be Blood. Paramount sure did beat Universal to the punch in reference to the earliest release date, which is a good enough act for me. Well, that and lossless audio. Does anyone know how Paramount will present their audio? Since I last checked, even their HD-DVDs have been given the shaft on lossless audio, and I hope this does not transfer over to Blu.

Cloverfield will have the same exact features as the DVD, and there won't be no special 2-disc Blu-ray edition as promised. That sucks. I own the 2-disc special edition of Transformers on HD-DVD already so I'm happy about that.

I could care less about transformers on Bluray now. Paramount blew it, and should have released it on Bluray when i had interest in it. Here's one TF sale they won't be getting from me.

    But i'll be getting Cloverfield

I wish they would just release transformers so we can all stop hearing about it. I'm not sure why everyone thinks that movie is so great. There are plenty of Paramount catalogue titles that I want more.

I was hoping for more of their "previously released on blu-ray" lot, like Trading Places & Coming to America, movies they already put on Blu. Plus Blades of Glory (which they yanked right before release day) would be nice.

Plus, everyone hoping Paramount would "make amends" for their financial manouvering decisison now knows that none of these big studios care about offending or appeasing the current niche-marked Blu-ray fans.

Yay! Cloverfield and The Spiderwick Chronicles! I will also purchase Disturbia when it is re-released; it was a decent but not great movie.

I agree about what a few people said about Transformers. I think it is highly overrated, but I will still end up purchasing it.

Face/Off was a great movie, bold roles for both Cage and Travolta. It will be great to see that one on Blu-Ray.
