In a move that is sure to warm the hearts of film lovers and Blu-ray fans the world over, The Criterion Collection today announced a slate of Blu-ray releases for later this year. Set to debut in October, this selection of film classics and critical favorites will mark Criterion's first efforts into the high definition marketplace. While specifications are a little on the light side, Criterion promises "high definition picture and sound" on all of their Blu-ray releases as well as all of the special features from the standard definition versions. Criterion has also promised to market these Blu-ray titles at a price equivalent to that of their standard definition counterparts.
Criterion confirmed the following titles for Blu-ray release:
The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear

"Criterion promises "high def picture and sound" on all of their Blu-ray releases."
That has to be the funniest line yet. It is like a BMW saying "we promise wheels and seats on all of our cars."
That aside, bring on Criterion. |

YES!!!! I'm glad I held off on 'The Last Emperor' DVD. (Very nearly came close to buying it.) Let's
hope the BD comes with ALL of the DVD's extras and lavish packaging. |

I just spent $60 on the Last Emperor. DAMNIT.
These should be about $80-100 a piece knowing Criterion. |

I wouldn't mind seeing a decent treatment of "Robocop." The current Blu-ray of it sucks. Have the old, uncut version Criterion DVD of "Robocop."
As far as pricing goes, according to The Digital Bits, the Criterion BDs should be priced the same as their DVDs. Their DVDs aren't cheap though ($30 to $40). |

Oh christ, I'm so excited about this.
Wages of Fear is in my top 5 fave films of all time, I had presumed I'd not see it on BD for years, if ever! |

This is truly an announcement that demands rejoicing. Not only do I just love the company, but what
a starter slate! I'll definitely be picking up The 400 Blows (one of my all-time faves), Bottle Rocket,
and Chungking Express. Several of the others I already own and probably can't afford to spring for
just yet. However, I love Gimme Shelter and The Last Emperor would look absolutely gorgeous. |

Great news! I purchased two Hitchcock titles on the Criterion Line, Notorious and Spellbound on DVD
a few years back...I hope
to see both of those in the near future...and yes I agree, SPINAL TAP would be a great addition as
well...:) |
