Kino to Begin Releasing Blu-ray this Fall

Kino International, distributor of foreign and indie films in the United States, will begin releasing Blu-ray titles this fall. Sources tell us that the first high definition title they will release will be Wong Kar Wai's 'Fallen Angels'. No technical specs or supplemental features have been announced at this time.
One of the gems of the Kino's catalog is the 1927 silent film 'Metropolis', considered by many to be one of the most influential science fiction films of all times. It was recently restored in 2002 and would be truly a magnificent experience to see the film in high definition.

Nice, Fallen Angels is a masterpiece!!! (See my Avatar) Although, I would be hesistant of Kino's blu-rays. They are not even in the same league as Criterion when it comes to transfers. |

Fritz Lang's Metropolis is a MUST BUY for me. It is definitely one of the greatest cinematic achievements of the 20th century. Without it, there would be no DARK CITY. |

Let's hope that this would finally end the distrib's fascination with interlacing.

Wait, Kino releasing on Blu, and they're NOT releasing silent restorations??
(Oh, sheesh, it's that 4:3-phobia thing again, ain't it??) >_<
And is it just me, but I've seen all the "restored" Metropolis on Kino, and darn, if the '84 Giorgio Moroder still wasn't more entertaining to watch. |

Well, I only bought one Kino release.
After that I stuck with Eureka's Masters of Cinema.
Hopefully Kino will find a common ground with quality after all, although I'm not holding my breath. Pro-B above is right -- they released interlaced transfers on DVD even when the frame rate conversion didn't demand it. With Blu-ray, their potential to mess things up just gets exponentially larger.
Still -- it's good to find a label with taste written all over it releasing on the best home video format ever. Here's hoping they make the best of it! |

I was recently wondering if a distributor would ever release old grayscale (black & white) films on Blu-ray. I am intrigued to see how this will look.
I would like to see Swing Time on Blu-ray in the future and this gives me some hope. |

I would like to know what ones you were getting $6.99... most Kino releases I ever bought (99% silent films) were about $5 or more than usual.
This is happy news, but only if we can see some silents released. |

I GOT TODAY MY ALIENS VS PREDATOR REQUIEM BLU-RAY IN THE UK , BUT DAMN UK BLU-RAY REGION B , WITH A LOWER QUIALITY IS NOT EXTENDED VERISON, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY FOX MADE EXTENDED VERSION IN THE USA, AND HERE IN THE UK JUST THE SHORT BAD REGULAR VERSION, I HAVEN'T EVEN SEEN IT YET AND I DO NOT KNOW IF I WILL.
I JUST THINK, IF IS THERE GOING TO BE REGION CODE , AT LEAST LETS BE FAIR AND DO FOR ALL REGIONS THE SAME BLU-RAY WITH THE SAME TECHNICALS ESPECIFICATION, BECAUSE WE HERE IN REGION B IN MOST CASES ARE DOOM TO LOWER QUALITY AND HIGER PRICES.
PS: I EVEN GOT MORE MAD WHEN I SAW THAT THE UK DVD IS IN FACT THE EXTENDED VERSION, BUT NOT SO THE BLU-RAY.
I , LIKE MANY PEOPLE TRY TO BUY AS MUCH AS I CAN FROM USA, BECASUE REGION B IN THE UK IT IS A SHAME. |

Gaius , they deleted all my post as well , but i keep posting it again and again, would appear to be that we are being banned because what we say about blu-ray uk region 2, it is like they see us as a threat for the blu- ray format, but they do no understand that the only truly threat it is to make blu-ray low quality.
As long as the uk region B go on makeing low quality blu-ray movies many people will get disaponited, and massive adoption won't hapen in the UK.
The only threat to the blu ray format would be don't say it. If it is spread around may be the big studios do something about it . But if nobody say anything about the lower quality of several blu-ray movies from UK region B it wont improve, and i know from many people that are holding on to buy a blu-ray player at least untill a free region one is out, due that they do not want to be locked to bad quality as twice cost than usa.
Please stop takeing this as a threat to blu-ray.
Blu-ray mean to have the higest posibble standar, and it is not usually hapening in the low quality UK REGION B. |
