Kino Lorber have officially announced and detailed their upcoming Blu-ray release of acclaimed director Andrei Tarkovsky's Nostalghia (1983), starring Oleg Yankovskiy, Erland Josephson, Domiziana Giordano, Patrizia Terreno, and Milena Vukotic. The release will be available for purchase on January 21, 2014.
The Russian poet Andrei Gorchakov, accompanied by guide and translator Eugenia, is traveling through Italy researching the life of an 18th-century Russian composer. In an ancient spa town, he meets the lunatic Domenico, who years earlier had imprisoned his own family in his house for seven years to save them from the evils of the world. Seeing some deep truth in Domenico's act, Andrei becomes drawn to him. In a series of dreams, the poet's nostalgia for his homeland and his longing for his wife, his ambivalent feelings for Eugenia and her Italy, and his sense of kinship with Domenico become intertwined.
Newly mastered in HD from archival 35mm film elements
It is a geat news that source is “newly mastered in HD”, and I am crossing my fingers that VQ is as good as it gets.
I watched the movie when it was theatrically released in 1984, since then, I was very much intriegued by this movie and I am convinced that this is the best work Tarkovsky ever made.
I purchased the laser disc, DVDs, but none was satisfactory except for the one released as DVD in Italy. But it is still in DVD format and it had no English subtitle. Video quality is really matters for this movie, and I expect that the blu ray release will do justice this time.
Huge Tarkovsky fan here, and this is one of the only ones I haven't seen. Some shots in that trailer are classic Tarkovsky and definitly remind me of Stalker. I must see this! Hope Stalker is on the way next!
