Of those, I haven't seen Side Effects or The World's End(bd has been sitting patiently for a few weeks now), so they didn't make it on my list obviously. As for the others, I had Warm Bodies on my list, but the Great Gatsby was disappointing and 42 was too pleasant.
I still need to see Only God Forgives, The Place Beyond the Pines, and a lot of other contenders before my list is anywhere near final.
I can't speak for everyone but I would guess that most of us only go to the movie theater when the movie is worthy of spending a little more time and money on seeing right away. If we wait a few months we can get the BD (with some extras) for about the same price, and watch it in the comfort of our own home theater; which means no lines, no waiting for dozens of advertisements, no dealing with noisy people or an out-of-focus projector. If the movie theater is good (a big 'IF' for a lot of us) that translates to a little better A/V presentation than we get at home. I'm personally only willing to deal with all that for a film like 'Gravity' or 'Star Trek Into Darkness'. I'll watch films like 'The Great Gatsby' and 'The World's End' at home. Which means I haven't seen them yet, not that I fall into a certain age or gender demographic.
@HD Goofnut: if you take a look at my list, I have Side Effects at number 1 and Warm Bodies at number 4. I was more split on Gatsby and The World's End s they are further down the list, and 42 never came out in my neck of the woods so haven't seen it.
Cool! I just made my list for myself to try out the new feature (nice addition, BTW), so I was surprised to find mine included here. I'm not necessarily a big list-maker because it's sometimes so hard to choose, but I think 2013 was an amazing year for Blu-ray—I bought more titles than any previous year!—and I'm glad others agree.
Nice surprise for the new year. I learned a lot from this site and community about movies I never heard of. I'm glad I could give back something, even if it is only my limited personal taste in last year's releases (too many great blurays came out last year ).
Interesting concept but what are the criteria for including the lists here? Movie opinions are "opinions" so how can you have a one better than the other? I will concede that those who managed to come up with 10 or more top movies for 2013 were certainly creative.
