The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has announced that eleven Chinese electronics manufacturers have been approved to begin Blu-ray disc and Blu-ray player production, starting next year. The companies, which include TCL, Malata, and Desay, have all turned to Blu-ray since the fall of HD DVD in order to get in to the growing high definition market.
Since the fall of HD DVD, the BDA has increased to 187 members, while the International DVD Forum has decreased from 240 members to a current level of 163.

China has a huge piracy problem. I hope this decision doesn't come back to bite Blu-ray in the ***. |

I just hope they don't start making ways to crack Blu-ray now. Bringing prices down due to competition is a good thing tho. |

Could help expand the base by a lot, but also could hurt by piracy. |

Sorry, but I do NOT trust the Chinese!
Remember, China is the country where, several months ago, one of their companies made contaminated pet food that ended up killing hundreds of dogs and cats here in the U.S.
No thanks. I don't care how low a price point they offer. When it comes to Chinese products, you will indeed get what you pay for -- a box of junk!!! |

Haha, no these are not children's toys!
Actually I'm excited for this news. Especially the last part about BDA growing and DVD group shrinking. Companies are now showing their support in a more obvious way. |

myrdh: I'm not talking about simple, harmless things, such as who makes my socks or underwear. There are certain things, like technology or food or cars (yes, the Chinese are going into the car-making business), made in China, that I would not touch with a ten-foot pole.
I don't want to go off on some big political debate about China, but the country stinks. They don't even care about their own people, let alone us. Take your Chinese junk, and enjoy it. Not for me... |

Wah wah wah !! - this is GOOD news guys, the average consumer can't tell the difference anyway, so the big name manufacturers will have to compete and lower their prices for all these people (aka the mass market).
And remember the silver lining, that "widespread piracy" is after all an indicator of how popular the format is!
This is inevitable, and should be a welcome step in blu-ray's path to mainstream success as a format. Did you grumble when cheap Chinese DVD players first came out? |

moverob: there are tons of stuff made by chinese that are great, alot of the PC products and components are made from them, such as ASUS products. Besides, you might need to dig through some of your everyday gadgets and stuff to find some parts or all of it are made somewhere in Asia, so chill out with the stupid remarks.
Why did you bring up food contamination? Im sure that incident kill less people than your average americans who eat too much McDonald and die from obesity on a daily basis, lol.
ANd talk about bad products, xbox 360 = worst hardware in this gen with RROD defect issue. |

Quality or not the BDA just increased to 187 members while the DVD association dropped to 163. As time goes on I only see these numbers increasing, and the potential for mass market adoption happening quicker. |

So much for quality. Now we will have the ultamite in cheap blu-ray. I was hoping it would take a lot longer for this to happen. |

moverob "They don't even care about their own people"??? have some knowledge b4 you open your big mouth!!!
no country on this planet cares about its own ppl as much as the Chinese!!! your stupid president flew rescue team three days after katrina hit, and visited once like 3 months later, as both the Chairman and the Minister of China flew to Si Chuan 90 minutes after the earthqauke, and gathered over 50,000 soldiers and over 150 rescue teams within ONE DAY. And take a look at those videos and pics from the aftermath, I dont see no americans nor Canadians that brave, that loving, and that giving. for that I'm so ashamed of our so called "human rights", "freedom", "democracy" all buch of lies and games thoes polictains play!! makes me sick!!!
the Chinese stink? i think ppl like you stink!!! and just so u know, those bad pet food was actually producted by one of my country's (Canada) leading companies, not the Chinese!!!
besides you being an ignorance and racist, one thing is for sure, you get what you pay for, I don't buy Chinese made products, cuz I can afford expenisve high end stuff, can you? then why don't you take a walk!!!
and i just checked you're from San Diego, CA, oh man, what a shame, I love the Jabbawockeez, and Phi, but it's a shame you from San Diago, too!!! |
