A Star Is Born Coming to Blu-ray

Warner Brothers has revealed that they are currently restoring the 1964 classic 'A Star is Born' at 6K resolution, in hopes of soon releasing it as a Blu-ray disc. The film, which stars Judy Garland and James Mason, will be the first film to be completely mastered at 6K - from scanning to restoring to mastering - and is expected to take six months to complete.
Ned Price, VP Mastering, Warner Brothers Technical Operations commented, "6K is typically a costly proposition, so that's why we are testing the waters on 'A Star is Born'. As the size of data is more easily managed and the tools become more accessible, we will increase our resolution."
No date has been announced for a potential Blu-ray release date.

I wonder whether the film will have fully restored scenes where production stills have served as placeholders for years. |

Yepper!!! You know this one is going into my collection!
Keep the classics coming, WHV. You are simply the best when it comes to treating the classics with the same attention and respect as you do the newer titles.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, WHV!!! |

Sounds wonderful. (Placeholders or not (imagine there would be no placeholders if there had been something to replace them with). Would be nice if somehow they managed to find some of the missing footage but what are the odds.) [I've never actually seen this film, so may as well wait a little bit and really see this film!] |

I thought at first this was the Barbera Streisand/Kris Kristofferson flick.
=D
6K resolution! I hope they'll do that for The Wizard of Oz. |

This is great news!
It's such a love/hate thing with Warner. They are bringing out some great titles, but not always leaving them as they should be. |

Most films don't even have 6k resolution...so it's not something that can be done for everything. |

I am just learning about this stuff, but I believe it means the image was scanned at a 6k resolution meaning 6 thousand horizontal lines compared to the 1080 we're used to. They'll then take that 6k image and downscale it to 1080. The result should be amazingly detailed. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong on that though! |

A truly great film...I'm wondering if the scenes with placeholder stills and photos will be replaced with newly found footage? Nearly 1/6 of the film is thought to have been destroyed. I even read a whole book about the restoration of the roadshow version of the film that took place in the 1980's...a very fascinating read to those interested in film restoration. The 6K I guess is a huge deal, but I'm kind of surprised they didn't choose a more well known (and shorter length) film...
like The Wizard of Oz or Singin' in the Rain. But hey, Star is Born is an awesome film...and since it was a Cinemascope release I'm sure it will look great once Warner has finished the work. |

Normally most 35mm film has a maximum resolution equivalent to 4K, given that this a a 2.55:1 cinemascope production, they must have done tests and found more detail than 4K can be obtained....BTW 1080 (i or p) is the equivalent to around 2K, which is about 25% of the detail of a 4K master...

Well Blade Runner was done at 4K for most of the BD release except for the effect shots, those were done at 6K, you can see it in the Final Cut. The other versons were done at 4k, you can see the difference.
Not a huge fan of A Star is Born but glad to see Warner doing this for an important movie like this and hope to see more movies done with this process.
I don't mind paying a premium for this either as long as its a good transfer! |

This is fabulous news! This movie received incredibly shabby treatment when it was first released and butchered. The 1983 restoration to its original length, and now this 6K restoration, are fitting karmic paybacks...I love Judy Garland, I love this movie, and I'll be the first in line for this Blu-ray! |
