Blue Underground Announces Initial Blu-ray Title Slate

Posted May 30, 2008 12:19 AM by Lindsay Mayer

Blue Underground Cult specialist distributor Blue Underground has given a glimpse of its first Blu-ray releases, ranging from animation to horror and science fiction. Known for going to great lengths to feature remastered transfers from original vault elements, the company promises to use the best available technical specs on their BD output, as is detailed on a slickly-edited two minute promotional video on Blue Underground's web site.

Full 1080p video encoding, 7.1 DTS-HD MA and 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio, D-Box Motion Code and extensive extras will be featured on 50GB dual layered discs. Announced titles include -

  • The Final Countdown
  • L'uccello dalle piume di cristallo (aka The Bird With The Crystal Plumage)
  • La sindrome di Stendhal (aka The Stendhal Syndrome)
  • Maniac (1980)
  • Vigilante (1983)
  • Fire & Ice
  • Dead & Buried (1981)
  • Due occhi diabolici (aka Two Evil Eyes)
  • Uncle Sam (1997)

The Final Countdown is terrific. For anyone wondering, it's a B-movie that rises above the level due to the A-list casting of Kirk Douglas and a young Martin Sheen. Released in 1980, it plays like a feature-length episode of The Twilight Zone wherein the U.S.S. Nimitz in 1980 is suddenly transported back in time to 1941 Pearl Harbor just before the Japanese attack. Fascinating stuff and an easy recommendation from me.

As for the other titles, looks like a couple of Dario Argento (not surprisingly) made the cut. But not Suspiria, which leads me to believe Blue Underground has lost the rights to Weinstein on that one.

A/V looks great though. Can't wait to check a couple of these out.

I'll agree with Guilty that "Final" is infuriatingly wimpy...But have to take history into account:
If it wasn't for Underground's sterling cult-rescue efforts, FC would still be locked away in the infamously weaselly semi-bootleg dungeons of Pacific Video--
Nice to see it not only rescued and restored, but given hi-def treatment, for complete redemption...BCI Eclipse's cult-Blu's have looked pretty good so far; time to make it a *real* Blu Underground
