Troma to Release The Toxic Avenger on Blu-ray
Posted April 3, 2014 07:18 PM by Webmaster
Independent U.S. distributors Troma Entertainment have revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray Lloyd Kaufman's cult film The Toxic Avenger (1984), starring Andree Maranda, Mitch Cohen, and Jennifer Babtist. There is no preliminary street date for this upcoming release, but many of the supplemental features to be included on it have been detailed. (See promo sheet below).
Welcome to Tromaville, New Jersey -- a small American town, terrorized by criminals. The town's corrupt mayor sits idly by while muggers, robbers and teenage punks victimize helpless citizens. Among the residents of Tromaville is Melvin, a nerdy, emaciated janitor at the local health club. That is, until he becomes The Toxic Avenger!
A gang of thugs devise a cruel hoax that goes horribly wrong as Melvin is cast through a third story window and into a vat of hazardous toxic waste. However, an unexpected metamorphosis takes place. As the chemicals take hold of his body, Melvin turns into the Toxic Avenger, doer of good and brutal mauler of evil! The rest, as they say, is history.
The excitement is non-stop as the hero sets out to single handedly wipe out the forces of evil that torment the people of Tromaville. The Toxic Avenger is non-stop entertainment that will leave the viewers glowing from the fun.
I will believe it when I see it. If this was being released by Anchor Bay then maybe, but Troma? They are just as bad or worse than Media Blasters when it comes to release dates.
I'm a huge fan of Toxie, but does anyone think 'ol Lloyd's gonna do anything more than slap the same laserdisc transfer they used for the last anniversary release on a bd???
I wonder if this will be the Japanese cut re-released on blu-ray? To my knowledge that is the only widescreen version of the film, and this poster does say it will be released in widescreen.
@toestub - The 21st Anniversary DVD was 1.85:1, and was the Director's Cut, not the Japanese Cut. I'm expecting this will also be the Director's Cut...especially since the runtime is listed at 87 minutes, rather than 91.
