Metropolis Coming to Blu-ray in 2009

Posted June 20, 2008 04:04 PM by Josh Dreuth

Kino International Kino International has revealed that they are bringing the 1927 Fritz Lang silent film 'Metropolis' to Blu-ray sometime in 2009. The film, which was painstakingly restored by Kino in 2001, is often credited with starting the Sci-Fi genre. At this point in planning, it is too early to speculate about technical specs, but special features should be similar to the DVD release.

'Metropolis' is often recognized as a major influence of more recent Sci-Fi classics, such as '2001: A Space Odyssey', 'Blade Runner', 'Dark City', 'The Matrix', and even 'Star Wars'. For its time, it was one of the most elaborate and expensive films ever made, equivalent to approximately $200M today.

As one of the best films ever made, many Blu-ray fans are eagerly anticipating the high definition release of this classic film.

...1927... WOW I kinda want to watch this just to see what they could do back then... seems wrong some how to take a movie that I'd assume would have degraded video quality and turn it into 1080P... will they colorize the movie?

Could not help but ask.

I hope they get somebody good to contribute music to this. Lately, the newly created music for silent films on video has made me cringe.

Unfortunately, some people won't buy it unless it has 7.1 silence, preferably DTS-MA.

I am looking forward to it.

Wasn't this one of Adolf Hitler's favorite movies? Anyways, I think I'd get it just to see what a silent
film that old would be like on Blu-ray.

With the continuos tirade of Sony rubbish filling the release schedule, its great to know others will release true classics instead of a continual flow of drivel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will not be re-buying this unless it's 20 frames per second this time. But the movie is just phenomenal.

Wow I just spoke with Kino today and found this directly from them. I had no idea that they were going to release info on it today already. I even started a thread with my email from Kino in it. I guess they weren't lying to me! Awesome news!

>>Wasn't this one of Adolf Hitler's favorite movies?<<

I rather doubt it, as Lang's pro-labor union stance was one of the things that convinced him to leave for the US in the 30's...

(And this's the Kino "ultimate" restoration from a few years ago, which still-recreates even MORE union-allegory subplots dropped from the original versions. As if you can't get enough of them.)

Yes!

I was hoping months ago that this would come out on Blu-ray. Now I will finally be able to see what a classic movie will look like in the format!

Beta-guy: When I saw this on TV, I was completely blown away by the production quality in the film. I have never seen any other early 1900's movie like it.
