Kino Lorber: Ronald Neame's Meteor Heading to Blu-ray

Kino InternationalU.S. distributors Kino Lorber have confirmed that they will release on Blu-ray director Ronald Neame's sci-fi drama Meteor (1979), starring Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Natalie Wood, Brian Keith, Karl Malden, Martin Landau, and Richard Dysart. The release is scheduled to arrive on the U.S. market in September.

Synopsis: A brilliant scientist, Dr. Paul Bradley (Connery) is summoned to Washington by NASA chief Harold Sherwood (Malden), who informs him that a huge meteor will smash into earth in six days. The only chance to destroy the meteor is to work with the Soviets, revealing to them top secrets. But as the clock is ticking, fragments of the meteor split off and come crashing to earth, causing enormous damage. And as avalanches and tidal waves take a devastating toll, Bradley works against all odds to eliminate the greatest threat the world has ever known.

Color me excited. The film gets a lot of grief, but taken as a 70s version of a George Pal movie it's great fun.

Kino is really on a roll here. Glad they're stepping up to release these MGM catalog titles that would otherwise not see the light of day on Blu-ray. The special effects in Meteor weren't exactly the best, but then again, it was 1979... Anyway, haven't seen this in a while, so I might pre-order it soon.

@Tom, does TF stand for Terrific Fun? And why do you want it slowed down? The HD masters may have been sat on for years although it may be a mixed bag pq wise per title.

I hope this means they have the rights to more AIP titles that MGM had like, Squirm, At the Earth's Core, and The Dunwich Horror

I remember watching this on premium movie channel. Once of the catch phases from Brian Keith was, "Fuck the Dodgers" during a toast. Funny as hell. For the sake of good memories, I will add this to the library. Put me down for one copy.

Meteor from Kino!? Are they serious? What's next? The Swarm? There are great movies out there that deserve the blu ray treatment other than these type "disaster" films. Give us Jean Renoir's great classic The Southerner instead!

ditcin I totally agree with you but I am very concerned. Meteor has been shown recently on MGM HD channel remastered and it looks great but the sound is MONO! It would be terrible if they don't use the stereo tracks.

Ok I found proof the movie is in stereo, but I am not sure about the blu-ray. This is from an Amazon UK user review for the UK dvd

"Even if you love this movie, this is not the product to get, unless you really don't mind it in FULL SCREEN! At least the US Region 1 copy by MGM is in wide screen (though not anamorphic!). Sound IS in Stereo, though it listed on the cover as Mono. Go look for the US Region 1 copy by MGM, which is out of print, or hope that someone will come out with a better copy soon."

For those who are fans of the movie, PLEASE take the time to write to Kino and let them know the film was in stereo and there are stereo tracks available. Whats been showing on MGM HD channel is beautiful HD but mono. Here is Kinos email
