Scream Factory: The Dark Half, Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh, UHF, and Invaders From Mars Coming to Blu-ray
Posted July 25, 2014 11:52 PM by Webmaster
Earlier today at Comi-Con, U.S. distributors Shout Factory/Scream Factory revealed that they are planning to add a number of catalog titles to their Blu-ray catalog. Amongst them are George A. Romero's The Dark Half (1993) and Monkey Shines (1988), Bill Condon's Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995), William Wesley's Scarecrows (1988), Tobe Hooper's Invaders from Mars (1986), Emmett Alston's New Year's Evil (1980), Dwight H. Little's Phantom of the Opera (1989), Stuart Gordon's Dolls (1987), George Miller's Mad Max (1979), Jay Levey's UHF (1989), and John Carpenter's Escape From New York (1981).
Exact technical specs and preliminary street dates for these upcoming releases are yet to be announced. However, Scream Factory has confirmed that Dolls, The Dark Half and Monkey Shines are scheduled to be released in November 2014, while the rest of the titles will arrive on the U.S. market in 2015.
I'd like to see some more classical horror like the Quatermass films, but I'm very happy for the fans of the announced films and very happy to be getting Scream Factory editions of Mad Max and Escape from New York. Scream Factory continues to steamroll the majors in releasing cult titles and doing them justice. Too bad they couldn't get ahold of Krull which is about to languish in Mill Creek hell.
I already have The Mad Mad Trilogy, and Escape From New York on blu-ray, so It's not necessary for me to rebuy them again. I am interested in getting: Monkey Shines, and The Dark Half this year. I'm not going to worry about the 2015 releases right now because that's too far in advance! I'll cross that bridge when I get to it
bluknight1...all the Quatermass movies are out on blu...Quatermass & pit (UK blu) and Quatermass experiment and Quatermass 2 togheter with X,the unkown on a Australian blu of excellent quality,a real steal and most likely to run OOP soon as yo get 3 movies for the price of 1!
By the way..Invaders from Mars is listed in germany x weeks and should also contain "the original"!!!
I really hate not knowing the specifications and bonus materials for weeks/months to come. I mean if "Escape from New York" has all the correct stuff I have right now, I can go sell my copy now instead of waiting, oh well. I'm surprised anyway, I'll buy 8/10 of those titles 100% for sure.
Shout, if you know what's good for you, you let Weird Al supervise the menu design. That's what made half of the UHF DVD a hilarious gem, which makes it hard for me to give it away for an HD upgrade; let him go nuts with the blu-ray content, and you'll forever be my No.1 company (barring your fumbles with the Halloween set).
What an amazing line-up! Just bought the French version of The Dark Half but I'll gladly buy the Scream Factory version. Candyman II is one of my favourite horror films (nostalgia mostly) and honestly, apart from UHF, I'm picking all these up.
Not that the current the current Mad Max release from Fox/MGM, redistributed by WB is a homerun, but Shout is going to have to really knock that one out of the park to get me to break up the complete trilogy tin. I'd upgrade Escape from New York for less, but they need to do more than add extras for my money. Fingers crossed for Invaders from Mars and a few others too.
Very happy about those Romero films!!! "Dark Half" and "Monkey Shines" are underrated little horror films. Interested in the Freddy Kruger "Phantom",too, as I haven't seen it in many years. "Escape from New York" is obviously great, but I already own it on blu, so it would have to be an extraordinary difference.
Did anyone else get really excited when you saw the title 'Candyman,' but when you saw the 'Farewell to the Flesh' part you let out a slight groan of disappointment? I've been suggesting the original 'Candyman' on their website for a while now. I'll buy the sequel, but please give us the original! I remember being terrified to death of the bathroom mirror after seeing that one for the first time as a kid.
Didn't the studio monkey with Romero's original cut of Monkey Shines? I'd love to see his original vision, if possible. In any case, I'm in for several of these. I'm most excited by EFNY, as I've been waiting for an extras-laden edition.
Finally there will be a must-own edition of Escape from New York on BD. And I'm stoked for UHF! Weird Al's album just opened at #1 on the charts; he is still relevant! Invaders from Mars will be a day one deal.
I got really excited when I saw Invaders from Mars, I wondered if it would include both the American version and the British version like my Image dvd of the film. Then I read that it is the 1986 remake, I have no interest in that one, oh well, maybe someday.
Of course I JUST bought The Dark Half from France. I'm gonna stop buying Region B horror titles as they all seem to be getting releases here. Well, except I'll keep buying Arrow releases cuz they're awesome. Also, when is someone gonna release the original CANDYMAN? That's the only one worth owning.
I doubt it but maybe Shout will fix Escape from NY's green tinted transfers...The theatrical release and the LD releases where correct as far as the tint of exterior lighting in the film...All DVD and BD transfers are fatally wrong so far....the night EXT scenes all had a rich blue tint...Maybe someday a EFNY colorist guru will fix this...FN shame...
Horror fans, please sign our petition and help us get Wes Craven's Deadly Friend Director's cut released. Warner Bros currently has the rights and probably won't be interested in investing so much in a movie like this, so let's convince them sub license the movie to a company who would be willing to do all the work
about the German Invaders from Mars release containing the original...not sure which is correct, but the amazon.de listing has this as either a single BD, apparently with only the remake, or an expensive deluxe set with One BD and 2 DVDs including the original. That makes me think the original will only be on the bonus DVD. I suspect the listing on this site saying 3 BDs is a mistake. If either release does include the original in HD, then great. Hell, I'd be happy if Shout included it as an SD extra, if that's the best it's available. Heck, if the German bonus DVD looks a lot better than the previous DVD that might be worth considering.
I agree completely. I just saw my post got voted down for no reason (I said NOTHING negative), and then I saw that almost every post in the thread has been voted down. Must be some kind of anti-Shout Factory nut troll. Same thing always happens to me in any thread involving Criterion Collection. I get voted down no matter what I say. Why do people even need to have the right to vote you down in a comment thread about blu rays? It should be like Facebook or something, whre they can "like" your post, or comment on it (they can post a disagreement), but not just "vote down" just for the fun of it.
Happy for Candyman II fans but I really am sad that part 1 still hasn't been released on blu-ray
I'm actually excited about Escape from NY and Mad Max releases. Yes, they've been released on blu already, but ESCAPE was bare bones/without any of the special features. hopefully they will port the commentary and maybe even do a new one. Nothing better than Russell and Carpenter commentaries. And I believe mad max only had a commentary with a producer. maybe they can get Mel and George to do a commentary
I agree with the posts about getting rid of the vote bar. Might've seemed like a good idea at first, but seems it's turned into a popularity contest, and an easy way for trolls to take a shot without having to try writing something intelligent. I was surprised to see how many posts were inconsistently downvoted, like Philly Q's. I think the negatives outweigh the positives as far as the usefulness of the votebar at this point. The suggestion to instead offer a "like" a la facebook. & keep the option to report "inappropriate" posts is a good idea.
I also agree about the voting bars. What is it suppose to signify anyway - To determine who can write the best, and worse comment? I think it's juvenile and silly because it really doesn't mean anything! If this post get voted down to zero, then so what. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.
What I don't understand is why people are downvoting the comments about which titles they are purchasing. I mean what the hell is expected here? Do you have to express interest in purchasing all eleven titles or risk being hidden because you pissed off a few fans of one specific title, by, god forbid, not mentioning it? I understand when people get downvoted for bashing, but this is a bit pointless if this is what its come to.
Also, for the record, Twilight Time acquired the original Candyman a good while back but kept on delaying the release because it has a cheap region free version available from Universal internationally. If TT has dropped the rights completely instead of keeping it on the back burner, it'd most likely end up on Mill Creek. It's Sony we're talking about here.
If someone could clarify if these are all coming out on the Scream imprint, that'd be swell as well. It says Shout!/Scream so I'm not sure if it's a joint announcement, and Escape from New York, Mad Max, & UHF don't really fit in with the line that well. I could see sneaking in EFNY because of Carpenter, but UHF? On Scream?
Will definitely pick up the Romero flicks, the Candyman sequel, Scarecrows, New Year's Evil, and Dolls. Last Hooper movie I blind bought was "Lifeforce" and it wasn't exactly my cup of tea, so Invaders From Mars will be squarely on my maybe list along with The Phantom Of The Opera, which I have no fond memories of, despite watching it more than once. Won't take much to make me want to try it again though, hell, I'll probably just get caught up in the buzz about the special features and wind up biting on day one -__-
Maybe Shout Factory can get the rights to movies in blu ray like John Carpenter's the Thing, Chucky collection, childern of the corn collection, Friday the 13th collection, Nightmare on Elm Street collection, Stephen King collection, the Stuff, the Blob and other movies that deserve proper restorations or a blu ray.
That psycho Wade Williams owns the original "Invaders from Mars," so we'll never see that in BD. IMDB says the remake runs 100 min, the Anchor Bay runs 102 min and the Midnite Movie runs 99 min...so who knows what we'll get.
