DRA One Step Closer to Blu-ray

Posted July 8, 2008 08:59 AM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray Disc Association The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has announced that DigiRise Audio (DRA), a locally-developed Chinese audio codec, has passed an important technical evaluation, and is now on its way to being adopted into the format. The adoption, if it is approved, is seen as a major step towards Blu-ray becoming the high definition optical disc format for China.

Sumitaka Matsumura, Chair of the BDA China Task Force, commented, "We are very happy that DRA, an original Chinese audio coding technology, has passed the BDA technical evaluation. The BDA is now taking final steps to formally adopt DRA as part of the format. The BDA is always open to such discussions and evaluations in its pursuit to creating the best format possible."

quexos, you'll take that tibetan abuse with a huge grain of salt, to go with the clothes, tv, and countless other goods you own which are manufactured in China.

On topic, I'm curious how adding another optional audio spec will effect profiles?

Is this a new way to encode the audio or is it actually an entirely new audio format?

Maybe they are trying the DVD Audio only disk format again.
but this time on Blu-ray media.

so now they're going to make a new profile (2.1) for this and we're going to need to purchase profile 2.1 players to take advantage DRA? Blu-ray already has enough audio formats to choose from IMO.

I'm guessing that DRA will not be required for use out of Region C for Blu-ray players. DRA was developed by a state owned company in China as a multi-channel audio codec, and it's the official audio codec of China's audio/video standard.

Unless you're looking for Chinese pirated discs (kidding), or Chinese regional material, I don't think you'll be impacted by not having DRA decoding in your player. Of course for those who want all their bases covered, the hunt will be on for a DRA bitstreaming player and receiver with built-in DRA decoder. Have fun with that one.

How many original DVD players decoded DTS? Some didn't bitstream it either. And then there were SACD's, and DVD-Audio discs. You'd need new players to use those, too. This is just something that happens over time. You can't just magically have a technology stop evolving. If you do, it'll become opsolete fast. So I think looking into this whole DRA thing, whatever it is, isn't a bad idea.

i'm all for technology contunially evolving, even if it means having to upgrade, but only so long as it's an improvement or a new capability. DTS, SACD, DVD-A, and bitstreaming were all improvements. blu-ray profile 2.0 already supports plenty of audio codecs, 3 of which are lossless. what does DRA offer that is better that what already exists?

Very true. Maybe it's just an easier way to encode stuff? I have no clue. I don't even know if it's a new sound format.

This is all about licensing and IPR and $, and not an improvement to the format.
