Blockbuster Seeing Increased Blu-ray Sales

Posted August 8, 2008 12:22 PM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray Disc Jim Keyes, CEO of Blockbuster, stated during a conference call with investors that the movie rental giant is now selling 2,000 to 3,000 Blu-ray Disc players a week since erecting Blu-ray themed kiosks at their retail the locations. Because of this success, he feels that Blockbuster will soon become an ideal location for the rental and purchase of Blu-ray products.

Keyes commented, "We think we are seeding the Blu-ray population. We are seeing consistent growth, new customer growth, which is probably contributing to our increased [in-store] foot traffic."

Probably because they break street dates on Blu-ray titles.

Now they just need to lower prices on what they sale a Blu Ray disc for.

It's great for Blu-ray as a whole that Blockbuster is seeing positive results with its Blu-ray efforts. This is really positive news.

Ya, increased foot traffic out the door. In Canada, Blockbuster is doing nothing more than overcharging their already gullible customers. $45-$50/Blu-ray title, when other retailers are anywhere from $20-$35/title. As far as I'm concerned, for example, if one store is charging say $20 for a certain title then every other store should have to sell it at the same price..

Hawk - Yup, 2-3K players a week, according to the CEO. Quite impressive. I'm also quite sure that they are a partner with Sony, so these sales are really helping them as well.

Blockbuster (in Canada) charges more for previously viewed titles than Wal-mart does for the same thing brand new.

But if they're selling that many PLAYERS per week... well now. That's pretty good.

@Marine Mike... Re: Breaking Street Dates..

Blockbuster breaking street dates?! Wow! Out here in Las Vegas, we're lucky if we get the Blu-ray titles the same WEEK that they come out!

I also purchased Mummy 1 and 2 for 19.95 and have purchased several 39.95 (retail price) titles on sales for 17.95 (new not used).....I have found some good deals, when they have a sale, and the sales are not always advertised.

I think the Blu-ray players are PS3s. (That's what they demo in their kiosks.)

Anyway, it is a nice demo and a good tie-in for their stores since they rent movies AND games.

And yes, the do sell movies. Not many at full MSRP, but I've bought 1 title when it was first released at $24.99.

At my local store they are doing a fair business of Blu-ray rentals. I have run into other Blu-ray/PS3 owners in the store recently. Also, I have seen customers gawking at the Blu-ray/PS3 kiosk and inquiring about it.

Compared to the tiny bit of activity I saw last year, this has to be bringing some revenue in to Blockbuster.
