HDTV/Blu-ray Combo in the Works for 2009

Posted August 13, 2008 02:14 PM by Josh Dreuth

Funai Funai has revealed that they will introduce a HDTV/Blu-ray Combo next summer in the US. The combo concept has been well received in the US for those consumers looking for a one-stop solution to their video needs. Funai hopes to keep that momentum rolling with a HDTV that has a Blu-ray Disc player built in.

No specs or pricing have been revealed this time, but pricing for a 42-inch model is estimated to cost between $1,100 and $1,300.

would be nice/convenient for a spare bedroom I guess...... but I can't see myself buying into these lower quality brands

That's a good price point for a 42" screen WITH Blu-ray playing capabilities, but it's the same thing as DVD/VCR combos, or T.V./DVD, or T.V./VCR combos back in the day....... part will break, leaving you with either a big paper-weight, or half the capabilities of what you bought....

i wouldnt buy this, but this is great news i think. its great for the k mart/walmart shoppers who dont
really care about who makes what. and its easy and cheap.

@beta man
I agree and I think buying integrated components is a bad choice for more "discerning" consumers. But for Joe Schmo who doesn't care and just wants the latest gadget all his buddies have at a low price, it can be a nice choice. And anything that can get Blu-ray to a wider user base can't be all bad, right?

A good solution for the "average joe".

This is going to open up a whole new world.

We probably aren't too far off from $15.99 release prices.

This is a great move! What a great way to get Blu-ray into the homes of those with HD TV's and no Bluray players!

@sheedoe
I think that article is saying that Philips (not Funai) is getting out of the TV businness and will just sell re-branded Funai sets.

Excellent idea. I think this would be a big hit if it can get out in time for the big sales.
I hope more companies follow this idea and release HDTVs with BD players, as long as they can keep
the price down.

If Sony were smart, they would include a similar combo such as that one by Funai except a PS3 would be installed instead of a regular BD player

I'm thinking this would be good for an RV. About ready to pull the trigger on one now that the bottom dropped out of the market, and one of these would go nice with it.

Was never a fan of combos for the same reasons someone already mentioned earlier. Now the RV scenario I could see but whenever someone asks me about a combo item I almost always advise against it. Good that they're throwing Blu out there in lots of forms though.

Could possibly be nice for my bedroom. I would be a lot more interested if it were a better brand.

Never been a fan of the combo TV/VHS or TV/DVD. However some are and this might be a great way to introduce BD to the masses.

Not sure if this is really necessary. People like having different kinds of players to choose from, rather than to be stuck with whatever is inside their TV.

Definitely interested in something like this for my parents but I'm not sure they can accommodate a 42" TV. Hopefully they'll have a smaller model as well (32" or so).

This sounds cool as a 1 stop display for your car, but I would never buy one for home. What happens when the Blu-ray player runs down and needs repair? You have to bring in the entire display to be refurbished is what happens.
