Indies Moving Towards Blu-ray

Posted August 15, 2008 01:28 PM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray Movies In the recent issue of Home Theater Magazine, it was noted that Blu-ray support from independent studios is up from the same time last year. While some studios are feeling the pain of transition, others are thriving. More importantly, the article reveals some upcoming Blu-ray titles from the studios which have yet to be formally announced.

I'm all for more indies on Blu-ray, and have been surprised by some of the ones I've found. However, if Hoop Dreams and Pirates 2 are big news for upcoming releases, that is pretty sad.

The Home Media Magazine website has digital magazines which are decent in case anyone wanted to check it out (I don't know what issue this new story was pulled from, but I believe Aug 3. is the most recent issue on their site right now). Most disturbing find in the magazine: "Harold" is coming straight to DVD (PLOT: Spencer Breslin prematurely goes bald - also featuring Cuba Gooding Jr.) What a shame. Been looking forward to it, but did not want to see it skip theaters - that is almost ALWAYS a bad sign.

@Minimejer06, I think there is a really good chance of that, considering that it is "Sony Pictures Classics". You can pretty much bank on any Sony movie going to Blu-ray, and this one certainly got a lot more buzz than most indies do. I've been pretty excited to see it too.
