Criterion Offers Upgrade Program, Too

Posted August 22, 2008 02:35 PM by Josh Dreuth

Criterion The Criterion Collection has revealed that they will offer an upgrade program for those Criterion DVD owners looking to upgrade their current collection to Blu-ray. Simply send in the DVD disc you want upgraded along with a check for $25 ($20 upgrade fee plus $5 shipping) and they'll send you the Blu-ray version of the title (disc only).

The company has pledged to use the current DVD numbering and packaging for Blu-ray releases with the only physical difference being the use of the blue Blu-ray case. That way owners can simply pop the Blu-ray into their existing DVD case and maintain the overall "look" of their collection.

It was also revealed that pricing of Blu-ray titles will be similar to that of the DVDs. Criterion has been mastering their titles in high definition for some time, so there is little additional cost (to them) to put the title out on Blu-ray. This, they say, will help people decide on which version to pick up when they begin releasing new titles day-and-date on both formats.

what is the point if I need to pay $25 per movie PLUS my own DVD and NO CASE?

I'd just grab a BD from amazon.

Not a bad ideal but with no case and no cover art plus 25.00 might as well pick it up from Amazon for a couple dollars more.

Be better off selling the DVD on ebay.

Sounds cheap to me. Amazon can get you a better deal.
I they wanted to give people an incentive to upgrade, they should provide a mail-in coupon or
something like the other companies have been doing.

This sounds retarded to me. As much as I love my blu-rays.. and I do. I can't afford a blu-ray player in every room yet. I still use my dvd's, so why would I trade them in plus $25 for a movie I could probably just get on amazon for 27 or so. Plus as they say to maintain the "look"... this will not help maintain the look of my BD collection... dumb idea Criterion

I already sold all mine when they did their announcement back in May based on the titles they listed for comign soon on BLU-Ray.

Other than that it is an ok deal. I think they mean if you own The Man Who Fell to Earth already and you want the blu ray then give them back the disc and 20.00 bucks they will give you the BLU RAY version and you just use the case you already have.

At least they are doing this you don't see WB doing this with Superman Returns do you! ? I thought not.

I POSTED THE FULL E-mail and details under THE CRITERION title Post.

yeah I really don't get the point of this. The Blu-ray is probably gonna be like $40. Criterion was
always expensive with a lot of their titles. That's the only logical reason I can see for them asking you
to send in $25. Also to blend in with your collection? Well how is that suppose to blend in with the
rest of Blu-ray collection without the Blu case?

They aren't using the BLU cases from what I can tell. Thank GOD! They usually do very good packaging... it sounds like it will be a shorter version of what they were doing... but we will see. I wish they would just simply post PICS on their website of their cases so we knew what they were talking about.

Why do they want our DVD versions? To chunk them? No thanks. I'll just sell them on ebay.. This is a shabby idea indeed. It seems like a lot of trouble for the company too.

I'll likely just be selling my DVDs on ebay and just picking up the Blu-Rays on Amazon or DVD Planet as well. The rebate deal isn't that enticing at all really. Maybe they'll adjust it at some point.

Very much agreed with most sentiments. Criterion's upgrade program is bizarre.

Do you guys even read the announcement..........you only send back the disc, not the case. You get a BD and put it in the original case which will blend in better with the rest of your DVD cases, unlike the BD cases. What's so hard to get about that? If you don't want to, don't but for some it is a good deal.

Speaking of the blu-ray disc they send out to you. Is it going to be a special uber edition over the current blu-rays out there? For example I have the Criterion edition of RoboCop. Now I am not interested in the crappy blu-ray version out there from MGM, but if they are making a better edition on a 50GB disc with lossless audio. I am game. Anyone know?

Uhhh maybe YOU should re-read it yourself. It says they want the dvd PLUS $25. How does that make sense?? Why not just keep the dvd and put the $25 towards the Blu-ray version???
